Ok, it's not as exciting as the other snakes posted recently, but it's the first one I've found in the yard this year. This little garter snake was kind enough to let me snap a few photos before I sent it on it's way.
The wife doesn't share any fondness for them, would prefer I remove them. Hope she doesn't go digging around in her flower bed any time soon, she may get a surprise.

thats a garter snake? Looks quite different from the ones in IL and MI....the ones here seem to be more brightly colored. we have been taking daily walks near the Fox and Illinois river while here in IL and there are snakes in every bush, sunning themselves.. quite a variety too... watersnakes are just waking up in MI, still in the 30s there at night. Time to start looking for baby turtles...

This one was due for an exfoliation, but it's typical of the colors around here. Brown, black and olive green, but always the defined band down the back and chequered pattern on sides. Every now and then I'll see one with some red flecks, but it's not common in my area to see bright colors.

snowmom, I like to look for baby turtles around here too...
I find them when I hit my golf balls in the pond. Playing partners wish I would just play golf.

Same species, Stanford University Looks like it comes from the Chernobyl region, right? That is one jacked up garter snake. Amazing variance.

They live in a nature preserve on campus. Maybe radiological research in the physics lab........ O You guys have a highly desirable pure black form of garter snake. Velvety and dark... wicked!

all beautiful! I see the stripes Garagerocker, in your later photos... Shotgunner, those are amazing. Thanks for taking the time to show us the variety and the beauty in them. I caught uncountable garter snakes as a kid, the ones in northern il were greens and had a yellow dorsal stripe, with black and ivory accents... snappers abound in our area. so prehistoric. i came across a huge mossback mama striding along a path last spring, up all the way on all 4, with her head held high tail extended behind.(looking for a nesting site and distressed on the limestone where she was- no sand close by) she made me believe i'd seen a dinosaur... awesome.

Ohio Eastern Canada San Francisco All wild type snakes. No captive mutation. I like the pumpkin colored one. Nothing like that around here. Supposedly, the scarlet kingsnake is found in parts of KY and it is very colorful. I've caught corn snakes that were fairly bright, but we've got mostly camouflage masters - copperhead, garter snake in drab colors, black snake, and timber rattlers a little south or east of me. Snappers in every waterway, pond, lake and puddle. Used to catch huge ones growing up on the Ohio River. Watch your fingers!

@shotgunner Ugh, I hate that that's the username I'm stuck with. Long story. I may drive up, it's about a three hour drive. Any kind of agenda, or just a greet at the show? I should jump over to that thread. The rest of my family is heading to the Cincinnati zoo, which is halfway, with cousins that day.
