Microsoft argggh!
Me suspects that, just like many other techhies. Use these upgrades to change your settings and become the default apps. overriding your current settings.
My wife had that happen to her laptop the other day. I had her resist getting changes she didn't want for a long time but "it just happenned" like it did to you one morning.
One of the last Microsoft innovations I had to master in the last ten years or so was dot net as a development platform. I had to remake myself as a dotnet and C Sharp guru to be desireable on the jobs market. Due to these "innovations" tech companies are able to increase the number of Green cards and other tricks, like outsourcing to give away American jobs. I guess that, like shopping at Walmart, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to being American and promoting the USA. (Or maybe being American and Capitalist is exactly what we are doing)?

Yeah, I gave up fighting it and took our machines to our computer guy and had Windows 10 properly installed with my old shell program so it looks and works like the older operating system. I kind of like it now that I'm used to it. A few operations are more tedious but overall the computer seems much faster now than it was previously....Mel

I rarely use that computer. But when I go on the computer pops up the Windows 10 upgrade option so I just close it out. But I came in one time and the computer was out of sleep mode doing an upgrade. When done it said I had successfully installed Windows 10.

Several months ago I started getting the upgrade pop up too. I read on line about the sneaky install and how to get rid of the reminder and keep it from deciding to install itself. You to go to update settings via control panel where one disables "recommended updates". Worked for me then, but maybe they have changed that too...

Have to admit 10 is faster than 7, but overall a pain in the rear. Recently they slipped in a photo organizing somethingorother that is totally stupid, makes me wonder if 10 is pretty much an information gathering program for MS, and I've isolated us as much as possible. I've heard rumors of future usage fees from a couple people in the industry.

quartz it is most certainly an information gathering program first and foremost. I hate the photo program included with it, not nearly as easy to use as the old one. even email requires extra steps. I suppose if i'd allowed the automatic command feature i wouldn't have as many steps to work through. shotgunner, you hit it right on the head. malware x 10 !

Just wait until microsoft goes to a service model and you have to pay a monthy fee to use your operating system and office software.

Windows 10 sucks. I changed a while back and wow what a PITA. I use it daily along with word, excel and outlook for work. Now I have adobe reader installing at night with no permissions. Cannot believe this is such a POS! My next laptop will be an Apple. Very soon.

So here's the process to make it go away. Win7 I did it so it must be easy. 1]right click bottom task bar 2]select properties 3]select customize 4]select GWX win10 from the choices 5]choose "hide icons and notifications" Viola, no more annoying pop-ups and no stealth install. I don't know if it works with Win8 but I'm sure there's a way.

Lee, I just did that the other day, was tired of looking at that stupid logo on my taskbar. Unfortunately, it doesn't go away permanently. It just gets hidden from view in the taskbar (instead of on it), and at some point, MS will have an upgrade which will pop it back up again.
Don't know how it works with WIN 8. I like WIN 7, don't care for 8. If I had my druthers, I would still be exclusively using (now unsupported) XP. I also believe that WIN 10 is totally invasive, like a cancer. Definitely an information gleaning process. I like control over my settings. I don't want them to know my location, I don't give a rats ass that they can "customize" ads for my location. Stay out of my living room!!!
I would not be buying MS stock, lol.

That's the update that GIVES you the whack-a-mole WIN10 popups, the one you want to get rid of.

If you go into your control panel and select KB3035583 it says nothing about what it is, just says it "resolves issues". The "more information" link will take you to the ms site. support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583

looks like KB2952664 is a companion update that should be unchecked when doing updates. Your auto updates should be set up to not automatically install recommended updates the same way as important updates so you can choose which ones you will install.
