The sound of it sawing will put one to sleep! I run it in jumps and spurts. It is not fast tho, Starts out cutting about 4 inches an hour but then when it gets further down it will slow up. then towards the last it will be faster again. I may run it for a few hours and then not turn it on for a week. I am in no hurry.

No, the saw and wood belongs to a friend and I got it working to cut this for him. I really just enjoyed the challenge of getting it set up and working.

We talked with the owner of the rock shop in Vantage, WA a few years ago. Asked how long it generally took to cut with the recip. saw out front. He said he times it with a calendar rather than a watch.

It looks like you have to turn the wood to cut, or do you just remove the reinforcing rib after the blade gets far enough down?
I would love to see more detailed pics, it looks much simpler than this one from J2B2.

The reinforcing rib comes off and just keep on cutting. the diamond segments are two inches long and the blade is tool steel of some kind. It lookslike it was modeled after a wood cutting drag saw.

Can't put in on to soon or box will hit the guide.

I take a 100 grit silicon carbide grinding wheel and hold it in my hands and rub the sides of the wheel back and forth against the cutting surface, exposing the diamond. You can feel the exposed diamonds with your fingernail. Really does not take very long at all to do it.

I have tried that but got to thinking i was removing material from the sides of the segments, It5 really does not take very long to dress the inserts a bit. Probably less than 5 minutes. I use Diesel for lube and find that I really don't have to dress them all that much. I was using water and on soft material it work but on the harder materials the segments would glaze over in no time and would not cut. It is still a learning curve for me.
