Pictures? Prices? Here we go again. Yup. I ate crow, lots of crow, on the subject of trust and the first words out of some peoples fingers is "I am looking for some". Burn baby burn. Mister fordite, many people on here have been burned by people that just jump onto the forum and immediately try to sell their "stuff". I am not saying that you are doing the same but we have rules about getting to know us and build some trust both ways. We are not like Etsy or any other selling platform dedicated to just buying and selling. We are a community of friends, happy to make new friends but at the same time we are a bit cautious. Please join us. We would love to get to know you, know what your interests are as far as lapidary goes and see what you have to offer. Thank you. Jim

I might get in trouble here, but does China make fake fordrite yet. There is "fake" fordite in the sense that it's marketed as being from a specific era when it isn't. It's stuff made after the automobile painting method that created fordite was rendered obsolete. Apparently you can tell by the colors found in the fordite if it's legitimate or not?

"Q4 - Can you tell a novice how to spot fake Fordite? Now that Fordite is becoming popular there is bound to be some Faux Fordite being offered for sale. Genuine Fordite is made up of very fine layers microns thick giving some very fine and intricate patterning. Here are some tips to spot fake Fordite. Limited number of colours. Marbling type of designs where the material was mixed rather than laid down layer on layer. Wider and thicker sprayed layering that would suggest not being from a major manufacturer. If the piece can’t be polished to an auto body shine. Q5 – What is the difference between UK and US Fordite? I used to think the main difference was that USA fordite had a primer layer between each colour layer rather than colour on colour. But over time I have seen USA Fordite that is colour on colour. The other main difference is colours used and an expert would know the colour ranges used in USA and UK production. blog.jurassicjewellery.co.uk/post/8303518315/fordite-an-incredible-fossil-of-the-future

A lot of the fordite on the market right now is actually boatite, after the fordite craze people started looking for other places to get it since the new methods of painting cars does not produce it anymore. The boat factories in the great lakes region still were using this method so alot of the boat factory paint booths got cleaned out. You can usually tell by the brighter colors used on boats vs cars which one you have. There were a couple guys running around Quartzsite with about 100 lbs of it this year and most of the dealers got several pounds.

... but we have rules about getting to know us and build some trust both ways. Jim, while you were off trekking the globe we had another long and painful thread unfold with a rockshop lady in Minnesota and the bottom line is the Admin of the board came on and confirmed that there are no said rules, written or unwritten. It's purely buyer beware. We are adults and if we like the offer we can respond to it, if we don't don't.

hahaha There ya go making me eat crow again. Did you notice that I have a crow feather on my walking stick?
I am wondering where and when the rule thingie got started and why it took so long for admin to step in and clarify. This has been going on for years and nobody stepped up with facts. I used to be on the side of "trust until burned" and I took so much flack and ate so much crow I was beginning to like it but switched to the majority side.
Looks like we are now a selling platform with free advertising and no safeguards other than paypal. There goes the neighborhood.
Burn baby burn. hahaha Jim

Looks like we are now a selling platform with free advertising and no safeguards other than paypal. There goes the neighborhood. I think we'll still watch each other's backs pretty good. If a known scammer shows up I bet we will still put up a racket. This particular wannabe seller needs to start coughing up some pictures - either in the thread or by PM doesn't really matter I guess. If someone blindly send them money without seeing any proof of product then I would say the problem is with a buyer who doesn't quite get the concept of beware haha.

Yes, there is fake Fordite around. There is a guy in the Metro Detroit area that makes what he calls fordite. It is pure crap. He has some on ebay right now and he has been on Craig's List under many different names claiming to be from different parts of the country. Same ad, same pictures. The stuff is probably from model paint. It is super soft and will gum up tools pretty good in a flash. He claims that he 'freezes' it to make it work. It looks like what you might scrape out of the bottom of an aquarium. EWGH!
There are also people with legitimate automobile Fordite, but most of it is not old. I work with it all of the time and it gets easier and easier to spot what is good and what is not as you work with it.

If it was real Fordite, what would it sell for? Say three 1 lb chunks?

Rainbow calsilica might also be a 'fordite' imitation, but it was so bad, they had to call it something else LOL...
