June 2016 Friendly Cab Contest /Challenge This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome. Theme chosen by prior winner: 'rough edge' cabs. Something with at least one natural/rough edge or surface. Rules: update [ only final photos required, also the winner chooses theme for the next contest ] Cabs entered must be completed by the deadline (they can be started before the month). You can enter as many photos of the finished cab as you like (within reason) on the same post. If you decide to add another photo later on, please edit your original post. Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified) in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the item with or without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.) We ask that all entries submitted to this contest be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). any duplicates will not be included in the voting list. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the material, the process or what ever else you would like to share. Also, don't forget to include the name of the material. If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first. Prize : Winner gets to choose the theme for the month following voting as well as the prize provided by Tommy

Ok, I'm officially putting my money where my mouth is - as the old saying goes. I love the theme suggested by Don and picked by Randy so I'll get us started with a cab I started and finished today. This cab is from a 1/2" thick slab of Lucky Strike thunderegg (double) that I bought at the mine in Oregon last weekend. It's a pink moss agate I've seen referred to as "curtain moss." Because the slab was so thick, trimming the preform also required turning the piece sideways and making a difficult flat cut - so one preform became two 1/4" thick pieces. The slab had a large natural internal void filled with large betroidal bubbles (I don't know the correct name for these things). One edge of the void with the bubbles forms the top edge of the cab which I left natural, unshaped and unpolished. This was a fun piece to work with and it took a mirror shine with a slight undercutting on the moss plumes which makes a nice visual effect on the surface when viewed at an angle. Thanks for looking.

glennz01 if nobody has stepped up yet I will sponsor the prize this month. In the unlikely event that I win the next runner up will get the prize. The prize will be a domed preform cabochon mounted on a wooden dop stick, for every entry we get in the contest. This means if we get ten entries the winner will get ten mounted preforms. The domes and girdles will be rough through 200 hard wheel, ready for final shaping and polishing. That's only because it's how far I go with my cabs in process before I dop them and head to the soft wheels. I don't know what the materials will be yet but they will be nice and chosen from my active work in progress which means they were started with full intentions of being completed and sold in my shop. Photo is for example only ... most of these will be finished and gone already by the end of the month. If someone has already spoken up to sponsor this month then I'll sponsor the following month. Wow, what a great invitation for others to not only compete, but also to continue working on stones.

Well I got my wheels back but instead of sending a 280grit they sent a 220 grit which is more then likely too large of a jump to go to the 600 wheel. I had to leave a message with the company so hopefully they call back tomorrow or I will. I'm frustrated that its been 2 months since I sent my wheels in and I still can't make a cab start to finish without it taking a few hours to remove the scratches between stage 2 and 3 Since I did get my other 2 wheels back I can probably make something but I would substitute wheel 3 for a pad thingy that I have.

I'm hoping to enter, but haven't been too well of late. I cut a couple of stones at the weekend gone and am feeling a bit better so hope to do something this weekend towards this.

Here is my entry for the contest. It's a Graveyard Plume Agate cab with a natural edge. The top is natural. The other sides are shaped. It's part of my last July'16 tumble in a UV-18 vibe.

Well by using the old 280 wheel as a 500 and the new 220 I am able to make cabs faster than before It leaves some minor scratches as the jump is still to large but it works. Here is some Moss agate with Druzy I slabbed. The material I got from my boss, I think it is from Oregon.

Two first's for me 1) Never had I tried a natural edged cab. 2) First stone I've put in a comp. Here is a rather plain agate, from glacial deposits near Glenrowan, Victoria Australia. There are not alot from this area that are colourfull but it is local to me and self collected.

I feel compelled to enter the cab competition this month, partly because I proposed the theme, but mainly because there is absolutely zero chance of getting my hands on some of Tommy's awesome work if I don't. We've all seen the material that goes across his workspace. My entry is from a piece of Kentucky agate I had laying around that seemed destined for something like this anyway.
