Was gifted a huge,12 inch long 6 inch wide and 8 inch wide hunk of I believe pyrite! It's very very heavy. They thought it had kyanite in it. Anyway can I slab this with my Lapidary saw or will it ruin my blade? It sure sparkles in the sun. They found it on a mountainside in Ga.

I think the Flickr app will allow you to upload internet sized images to conserve bandwidth

Hardness shouldn't be an issue for cutting pyrite since it's softer than quartz / jasper / agate, but according to an old thread here it sounds like it can make a mess. I've got some chalcopyrite that looks really solid but likes to crumble, but it's not the pure cuboid crystals either so that might depend on the host rock (if any). If it's arsenopyrite i'd be concerned by the arsenic content but honestly don't know if it would be hazardous to cut or not. Good luck with the pics for some better advice.

orrum, do you have a computer? I can't remember if you had a computer or not. If so, you can really get your pictures down to manageable uploading weight by using Irfanview (free) and the save for web plug in (also free). It will reduce the dpi to 72 dpi (the size that is displayed online) which will make your images much faster to upload. It won't change the size of the image -- just what I like to call the "weight" of the image. All you have to do is click "save for web" and you're done.

I have slabbed pyrite before and got several slabs and even some cabs... If it is an enclosed gravity or power fed unit it works best... if it is hand fed or table top.. well you will be looking at turning your room black

Careful cutting Pyrite. A friend slabbed a lump of Pyrite and then didn't use his saw for several weeks, when he came back the Sulfur in the Pyrite had reacted with the cutting oil and produced what I guess was Sulfuric Acid, it completely dissolved the part of his blade sitting in the oil and was well on the way to eating right through the sump of his saw.

That's very interesting pauls. I know that pyrite suns will destroy themselves if stored together from the sulfuric properties (don't ask how I know - *sigh*)

www.ebay.com/sch/Collectibles/1/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=pyrite+sun&_sop=16Never store them together (they will crumble away to garbage in a relatively short time) and now days I wouldn't even recommend buying one unless you can hold it in hand - and really had to have one. MANY fakes on the market now. People get the suns not embedded in shale and use a dremel tool or the like and carve out a place to glue the sun in. This picture found from Mark's link shows a good example of (what I consider to be) a fake - the bottom sun MAY be natural in the shale, but I'd guess the other 3 were added to increase the perceived value. Even the 4 Suns in this slab of shale would ruin each other within less than a couple years. (and some clown probably sold it for a couple/few hundred bucks)

What's the appeal of the shale? I think they're more attractive without the matrix. And i'd have to agree, that example does not look natural.
