I decided to try an experiment with oil cleaning. I took a maple cone filter that had gotten contaminated and clamped it over the mouth of a bucket. Much runs right through, but the big stuff and the larger of the finer particles will be trapped. The theory is that this will allow the really fine stuff to settle out and it will go through a finer filter quicker later as it will not have all of the rock snot to plug the filter. We will know in a month or so.

OK, today I wanted to do another experiment and went to the shop to get this bucket of oil. I have been using the oil by scooping it out with a cup as I needed it. Today I poured the remaining oil into a jug and the scum on the bottom, (we will name it Hillary) was only about 1/2 inch thick and very hard. It did not move when I poured, and barely bled as the oil poured off of it as it was vertical. The vast majority of the solids stayed in the filter. I would call this a success.

A couple weeks ago I dumped the Hillary out of the filter bag and put it back in the bucket. Then I ran another batch of oil through it. Again it collected almost all of the particles and only left a small amount of fine Hillary on the bottom which did not move when I poured the oil off of the top.
