That's why I'm here. It's like the joke about not having to outrun the bear, just everyone else.

How did you polish the botryoidal backside of your cab?

How did you polish the botryoidal backside of your cab? Tile saw to Lot O. I usually go to the rotary for a week or more to get rid of saw marks, but I was up against deadline, so this one spent four days in 120/220. I've ramped up pretty quickly in 8 months, but wheels are still a ways off.

Quite a few people shape stones with a saw and tumble them to finish. That is a method to mass produce cabs with high efficiency.

So any stone that is polished by ANY method can be entered? learn sumtin' new every day!

Each one is hand made and carved into a general shape or usually are. I thought of doing that method myself to produce a lot more at once.

Thank you for your concern for the integrity of the competition though. You betcha! I had no idea a cab could be tumbled for this contest. May even enter someday if I can just tumble 'em. As long as it can actually be considered a cab.. So what is the definition of a cab as it applies to this contest? What is "considered a cab" so I make the right thing? I always thought they were made using wheels. To do that well takes skill & talent. Heck, even I could tumble one.

I always thought they were made using wheels. To do that well takes skill & talent. Heck, even I could tumble one. Most are made using wheels yes.. basically hand carved and domed on 1 or 2 sides, although the center can be flat, sometimes carved as well. This is not a true definition but a general one. Basically when you look at it you aren't generally thinking that it was tumbled. I do agree that using the wheels takes more skill but not everyone has the ability or room to get one. A lot of people also put cabs in a vibe to finish them which is a device I lack. But in general it shouldn't be just a slab thrown in a tumbler which does not appear to be the case, at least I hope it was made honestly to be a cab. I do agree that as the contest evolves things may be more than just simple cabs. I also must admit shaping cabs on a saw to precision roundness is a skill in itself... I would be lucky to have fingernails left when using my tile saw trimmer.

I know because I made that rule myself. Interesting....

Au contraire Monsieur Scattergun. Your rule is flawed. I have a pile of old tumbles, mainly Chevron Amethyst, I'm about to cab. They came from a time when good material was abundant and was often tumbled. Ditto some fine carnelians, bloodstones etc.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

I think y'all are taking it too literal and missing the part about him making the rule himself heehee.
Speaking of cabbing tumbles however - I've had a piece of Wingate that someone tumbled poorly and gave to me a couple years ago - I recently flattened out the bottom and domed it up and it's a gorgeous cab. No I have no pictures of it ... y'all have to take my word for it haha.
