Hi all, Just a couple of picks of my next project its a 3.5lb petrified wood cobble from the Waitaki River in Otago New Zealand. I will start this tumbling when I next empty out one of my drums. Will post pictures along the way. won't be perfect as it has a couple of very deep holes in it but will be nice and shiny when finished. Cheers Scott

A few people have mentioned on this forum that you can add this stuff to the crevases and holes and then tumble it. It will keep the grit from contaminating the next stage of your tumble. I forget what the "stuff" is called you fill the holes with though. Maybe someone else will chime in. That is a big pet!

I tumble a lot of rocks with pits perfect for catching grit. Tumbled a bunch of these corals and there was 100's of SiC 30 particles jammed in the pockets, and still are after polish. Make me wonder how important cleaning every cranny is. Under magnification, the jammed SiC particles rounded with the rest of the rock, and then polished with the rest of the rock. ETA No chance of tumbling the tiny vugs out of this coral. It is full of them clean through.

Never had too much of a problem with grit carry over with these larger pieces as I have a very rigorous cleaning process for them. Between grit stages I water blast larger pieces like this as well as use a spot cleaner pressure gun to clean specific pits and then run a long burnish with sacrificial material (read small agates that are moved back a stage). Hey what's the worst that can happen you have to move back a stage. A piece like this could take 6 months plus to get just right so and extra 2-3 weeks isn't a problem.

Amazing! The green isn't correct for any metal salt I am familiar with. What Yaya think it is?

Best response on this board in the past two years (which is all I know). We'll played shotgunnerwhoeveryouareyouare Scott Ha. Had no choice, some coral has so many tiny open pockets to fit grit into. Even a pressure washer would not remove them as the tumbling action hammered them in those druzy pockets. Whatodo ?!? Let em roll. Could use an awl and break the SiC particles which took forever. I did have a load with scratches from coarse grit particles one time. But the scratches were few and far between. They still polished well. I learned to let the last coarse grit run to go almost two weeks, and found out SiC 30 breaks way down. Partially because of these 30 grit particles(or 80 grit for that matter)getting stuck in those pockets. But that did not remove the jammed particles.

scottyhPlease post the smalls that you will run with the large wood. 3.5 pounds is a big chunk. Will you fill the barrel higher than 3/4 ?

Hi James no problems, will post everything and a week by week update. Plan is to run 3/4 full and just go week in week out until I am happy. Have 3-4 fist size pieces tumbling for a friend from the club at the moment. Will post a picture of those next clean out.
Cheers Scott

scottyh, what size tumbler are you using for that? I don't think it would fit in my six pound barrel and have any room for movement.
