I go to a little mom and pop jewelry supply and they have a lot of rocks, too. The girl there gave me those drusy covered wulfenite pieces I have elsewhere on this board. I found this yesterday and had to have it for my collection. $5. Such deep, rich colors. I love the purple. All of it, really. It’s 3”x2”x1”. It’s a big chunk. When not in the light, the purple is so dark it's amazing. What is it about us that makes us love rocks?

Looks like a band of blue in there. Is that common in fluorite?

What is it about us that makes us love rocks? Dodgy wiring I suspect ... Lovely stone all the same!

Can't get enough of this stuff. I've found some out here in the wild, but it's only slightly tinted and of course once it's out of the ground the crystals fade.

Never knew it could fade. I suppose it depends on the source of the color. Calcium Fluoride is colorless... At the fluorite mine in the Cady MTN, the stuff in the sun fades...Green and purpke

Some flourite is very colorful.
Yes, when exposed to light any colored crystals fade considerably.

Some flourite is very colorful. Yes, when exposed to light any colored crystals fade considerably. Red rubies and blue sapphires are color fast. Chrome colored emeralds are color fast. The salts that make the colors have inherent color natural to them self. The question is "how stable is the salt". Amethyst fades because the permanganate or ferrate salts degrade in uv.

And that's why most gemstones these days are either heat treated, irradiated, or plain dyed to keep that color. I know most apatites (except neon, a manmade color) and chrome diopside aren't treated. Peridot seems to hold its color. I think all tanzanite is treated, first by lightning, which is how it was discovered, now by man.
