Glad you venture out to the frontier with these experiments. Some encouraging results with your new method. Sure is a time saver. Keep posting! Consider this big rock tumble Randy. It grinds your regular tumbles quickly. Target was the quicky big rock. Bonus is fast media 'regular' tumbles. Probably works best with all Mohs 7 rocks in the rough grind. Just ground a bloodstone(did thread). It should be fine w/no defects like your fine tumbles. Funny, the softer rhyolite burdened the grinder motor. The bloodstone did not, typical of very hard stone.

When cutting spheres I have noticed agates and Jasper's grind fast on the gang wheel. Brittle almost just shearing away.
Marble and rhyolite feel "rubbery" on the grind and Jade is same but tougher than rhyolite which is tougher than marble.
I too want big tumbles. Thanks for your experiments and taking us for the ride.

Thanks for your experiments and taking us for the ride. That rhyolite would load the motor down with the lightest of pressure. Bloodstone, agate, wood, jasper, coral will not slow motor except under very hard pressure. Excepting some softer jaspers. Mostly Rio jaspers that are silicified mud/sediment. SE US coastal plain chert is just like coral, bloodstone, Montana, snake skin. Real hard stuff. Looking forward to doing some jade. I see fairly large jade carvings for cheap prices in antique stores around town. Most damaged and for sale cheap. Some very old. Must buy one some day and give it a go on the grinder and then to tumbler.
