I recently acquired a 7pound chuck of green Canadian Quartzite (what the label said anyways) how well does this stuff cut and cab ? Or do I have a new yard ornament ?

Quartzite seems to be quartzite regardless of color. IF it is well fused and compressed(sand). I say if it can be tumbled it can be cabbed. Good Mohs 7 rock. Tumbled Alabama and Georgia quartzite tumbled just fine. Polished fine. I love the stuff. www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157662367140412

Nice photos, thank you for the insight. The colors are a nice muted tone. This one's color reminds me of green aventurine. I will post pics once I slab it out

If it's Ontario green aventurine, it should cut just fine. Some can have more mica than others and be a bit of a hassle, though.

I personally don't like the stuff. Other people love it.
Maybe some of it is because of a place called Morgan Creek in ID. Lots of driving for nothing but quartzite and the entire mountain started coming down with me riding boulders. Plus, it all reminds me of the St Peter sandstone we have here.

SHD, Morgan Creek, at least the place I know, is a mountain made of quartzite. There are lots of signs saying no rockhounding and one place where it is ok. That one place is barely holding onto the edge of the mountain. I climbed up to see if there was something over the lip above and there wasn't. On the way down, hundreds of tons of rock began to slide down the mountain with me on top of a huge boulder. My boulder didn't roll, but most other rocks did. I would have to have played lumberjack if it had.

Mark I would take lucky over good anytime with a situation like that. Glad your okay cuz I got too much to learn here so your help so far has been spot on and very appreciated. Due to family issues here I won't be leaving for Montana anytime soon so I may need to plan a jasper hunting excursion somewhere close to home instead lol

Well, the MT picking season is not anywhere near its prime now any way. You have all winter to plan your move.
Take heart, the first time you hit the Yellowstone and get your agate eyes, you will be like a kid at Christmas. And, the river is never going to run out of goodies in our lifetimes so you have time.
