Howdy folks, Well yesterday you could have knocked me over with a feather, may dang saw actually ran most all the day without overheating so i got a bunch of slabs cut. Here are the pics. Sorry the sun is warm and the slabs still a bit oily so the pics ain't great. I love this stuff, palm shrinkwood from George West area. Much prettier than the pic shows. Little agate nodule that turned out to just be jasper. Sagenite from northern Mexico from a box from one of our members. Pic washed out. Nicer in person. Some spotted jasper stuff from the Rio Grande mix

All very nice. I REALLY like that palm shrinkwood! Could you tell what it was before cutting it?

Bob, Yes, those vascular bundles showed as little eyes on two sides of the hunk but it was easier to put in the vice to cut along the bundles lengthwise. Kind of like that effect too. Really did not look anything like this nice on the exterior though. Found this hunk on the roadside at Simmons City and almost chucked it down as I found nicer non shrinkwood palm there too.
hh5: George West is a town in the Live Oak County region of south Texas sort of SE of San Antonio . Whole area was a subtropical forest 10+ million years ago and is now one of the most accessible and easy to hunt petrified wood areas in Texas. Lots of palm, fern, agate wood casts, shrinkwood ( fractured and resealed pet wood) and a whole load of weird woods I can't identify in a multitude of colors. Area lies roughly within, but not restricted to, a triangle bounded by Three Rivers, George West and Simmons City, Texas. So much wood it erodes along the roadsides and the gravel roads are paved with it. Just grab a bag and walk the roadsides looking for rocky areas in the bar ditches along the road. Good portion of the rock is pet wood, jasper or agate....Mel

I like that spotted jasper from the RIO. I am a sucker for bright red like that.

Thanks Mel Actually answered my next question which was what is Shrinkwood. Now I can go back to the thread that I was just browsing with all the petrified wood pictures and get a good idea what different Shrinkwoods look like.
