"Jean is younger than me. " Hallelujah! I think James finally gets it! My big sister used to listen to that song (on 45). over and over and over. I think Jean did too. I don't think so. While I know the song and the group (actually remember Turn, Turn, Turn better), at ten years old, I wasn't that much into music yet. Was probably outside doing fun things like climbing trees, catching bugs, digging in dirt and skinning my knees. I pretty well fit the definition of a tom boy!
I had two sister, each a year older than me. They had their own friends, would lock themselves in their room and play the 45s. They didn't want their younger sister to hang with them, and listen to their girl talk, lol. But I forgive them!

You sound like me. No interest in blooming into adulthood. Tickled pink hanging out with neighborhood kids and friends. " Was probably outside doing fun things like climbing trees, catching bugs, digging in dirt and skinning my knees." Yea, come over and lets play. You'd fit right in. I remember the secrecy. They were homing in on the meaning of the music. Protecting their younger siblings's ears. Till fighter squadron Commander father figured out the words and nipped the music back. That's when WW3 started with he and her. Oil and water. sound familiar

Music was always a big part of my growing up Dad was big band aficionado so playing with 16 speed records was not uncommon Plus all us brothers shared one bedroom The oldest brother always had a transistor radio playing all night when we were suppose be going to sleep. A.M radio top 40. The first rock song I readily recall being so enamored with was
Funny how 8 year old can be influenced by lyrics that are way over his head and romantic rhythm. That mohs tho.
music was portable and was with us in every crazy adventure we got into. But I hardly ever left the house. Being shy as I was.
mostly

Ah you youngsters! We are in many ways defined by our music. I'm a child of WWII.

James, I think the older sisters just did not want me around their friends, a tag along. Especially the oldest one! I should clarify what I said earlier. "I had two sister, each a year older than me." They were not twins. What I meant to say was one was two years older than me, the other one year. Three girls within three years! My poor mom. Anyway, I had never really thought about the content of the music. I suppose it was possible that there were some "suggestive" lyrics, which would explain the secrecy, playing the old 45s in a bedroom. But I think at the time, it was probably mostly the Fab Four! Before being of driving age, mom would have to take them to the record store (no internet to order them on back then and have them delivered!) to buy them. She probably didn't pay too much attention to the content, but may have. I don't recall, but my parents were pretty lenient with us. But music back then, LIFE back then, was much simpler. Not loud and angry and full of expletives!

I think Dad resented the anti-war sentiment as much as sexual connotations. Of course my sister sewed a US flag upside down on the buttocks of her blue jeans and walked in the house blowing pot smoke in his face lol. She was a hellion. I tippy toed around those two.
Are you a middle or in the middle somewhere child Jean ?

Are you a middle or in the middle somewhere child Jean ? I am Borg, 3 of 6, lol. I guess being in the middle is supposed to make me stable? Yeah, right! I know there have been many studies on birth orders, and what it means, in families. Good Catholic that she was, my mom had six children in nine years. Sept 1955 to August 1964. Don't know how my parents afforded to keep and feed us, let alone send us to parochial school. Things were different back then.
Your sister does sound like a hellion! My dad would have slapped me into next week if I'd pulled that kind of crap! Just kidding, my dad is very calm, would never strike ANY human being, regardless of what they had done.
Forgot to mention.. My oldest sister that didn't want me tagging along? We always called her "the big cheese." Ha! And, wouldn't you know it, she is the only one registered Democrap in our family!!! Always knew there was something wrong with her...
