Hello all, as I've searched the internet for rock related information I've seen this site come up numerous times and have never bothered to join. Pretty cool seeing all the information and knowledge floating around here. I grew up in Washington state but I have lived in Alaska since 2001, did a lot of rock hounding down south as a kid, but with family and work came less time to get out.
The last seven years or so I've really gotten back into it after finding out about the local rock club. I've been writing the clubs trip list for the last six years and have really enjoyed it, even to the point of joining another club in Anchorage, about 40 miles to the southwest, and being on the trip list committee there. Before we joined the club, I don't know of anyone who went to both clubs, now it's fairly common and we have a couple combined trips each year. There's a lot of great stuff to find in Alaska, though access can be a bit tricky since there aren't too many roads.
My family has recently gotten into cutting slabs and polishing stone, we have 10, 14, 16, and 24 inch saws, the 24" needs a little tlc but it'll be fine. We have a brand-new 8 inch Cab King and just picked up a Highland Park combination unit that's old but really nice, 2 arbors that need to be set up and lots of motors, I keep the motors out of jetted tub units from work which is great because they receive such little use in that capacity. We also have 3 tumblers but frankly that's not my thing, though they get some use. Thinking I might get a sphere maker in maybe a year, I love spheres and we have some really great rock up here to make them. And a flat lap....
Every year I get asked by people from the lower 48 about going on trips up here, if you ever vacation in south-central Alaska, be sure to look us up either on the website or search on Facebook, Mat-Su Rock and Mineral Club, which I admin. We actually had some folks from Oklahoma join us on a trip up to Prudehoe Bay this summer, it was pretty great getting to know them and having them along.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you guys and picking your brains for information, hopefully I'll be of assistance to others as well. Thanks!
