Howdy folks, had heavy rain yesterday so my ride this AM was cancelled, So I went for a rock hunt in my buddy's Eagle pass decorative rock pile. Here are a few pics.....Mel The tumble stuff, small Rios, fancy rhyolite, chert etc: Big ole hunk of Devil's Toenails: Nice chert with fossils: Pet wood, maybe palm in center: Rio grande Agate, purple botryoidal on one lower right: Bacon lace agate. Nice one! My favorite Rio, small but nice! And finally, a hand sized geode that has dendrites just like a Sweetwater on the back end.

Nice! Was your buddy home when you hit his landscaping? Like that devil's toenails! Is the bacon agate rarer to find?

Yep, bacon Lace is pretty scarce. I find a hunk only every year or so. Last hunk I found a in the field was identical to this one and was at the Baker Ranch south of Deming, NM.
Yes, I always ask my buddy permission. He even directed me to a new pile with George West rock but it did not seem to contain any fancy wood. Sure had pretty flint though. Must not be from the Doebler Pit which Matt hunts.....Mel

I believe I recall your posting something about Texas flint. You posted some tumbled pics - I think? Is it as colorful as the higher grade Ohio material from Flint Ridge?

Nice ones, Mel! Are these from a landscaping place that sells decorative rock? Where does the rock come from originally?

Rob, Yep, my buddy's business has huge piles of rock from various Texas quarries. It's all sold as landscape material. All this came from the quarry at Eagle Pass, Texas. A whole bunch of businesses around town have landscaping just full of wonderful Rio Grande agate and pet wood. The places landscaped prior to 2008 got material from the real agate rich part of the quarry. The landscaping around my favorite butcher shop looks better than most rock shop yards (But he won't let me have any agates *L*). He's a mean maaannnnn. The quarry seems to have gotten into a bad section about four years ago and the rock has not been real good hunting since. I only check it out a couple times a year now just to see how the rock is running.
Bob, The patterns in Texas flint are not as wild as Flint Ridge stuff but it can come in any color. Swirls, bulls eyes, liesegang lines etc are the most often seen patterns in Texas materials and earthtones are dominant but there are lots of reds, golds, even blues and purples. The George West stuff is even more colorful than the usual La Grange flint. Remind me when you stop by and I'll show you a pile of flint in back of my shop I set aside when I landscaped around my shop. I had several yards of La Grange material brought in.....Mel
