My HF 3lb tumbler crapped out on me today after only owning/using it since April. I'm looking for something that will hopefully be more reliable and maybe something with a little more capacity. Unfortunately I blew all my money on tumbling rough and grit so I have very little to spend on a replacement tumbler so am looking for a good deal on a used one.

I've got two Lortone 33b's that I have considered posting for sale on the RTH board. One is four years old and the other three. I have replaced motors in both, so one motor has about 2 years service on it and the other about 1 and one half years. I want to sell both at once along with the extras I have. Here is what I can offer ...
2 Lortone model 33b tumblers with 4 barrels used exclusively for coarse grit only.
3 extra barrels. One used only for 220. One used only for 600. And one used only for polish.
3 Lortone replacement belts.
2 replacement lid liners.
4 replacement bearings/bushings.
1 replacement motor pulley.
1 replacement drive pulley.
If this were all purchased new at the Rock Shed it would total about $317 plus shipping. I chose them because they have best prices of the folks I deal with. I was thinking I could sell all these items for $145 plus shipping. I'm not sure if I can fit these all in a large flat rater from USPS but if I can that would be the least expensive I think. Otherwise I'd have to go UPS so I'm not sure what shipping costs. If your interested let me know and we can iron out the details.

I recently bought a 33B, 3-1.5B, Thunbler (possibly a "Model T"), and 66QT as part of a package deal from someone local. I really only wanted the 66QT which I got fixed up and running well for less than $25. I could send you the rest if you paid postage. I do not know how much postage would be or how much you would have to spend fixing these up. The 33B and 3-1.5B frames could be changed around for parts as they are the same frame, but I think you would still need a new motor and maybe need more parts. I think the Thumbler may just need a drive belt (although of course I cannot guarantee it) and I could also just send you that. I would include 2 Lortone 3lb barrels if you wanted the 33B and 3-1.5B. (I am keeping the 1.5 lb barrels for the time being as they may come in useful.) Let me know!

Care to tell us what's wrong with your HF tumbler? Motor, belt, something else? Just curious. I recently got mine running again after I thought it was kaput. Works fine -- but with a Lortone belt, NOT the junky HF Chinese rubber.

The motor tries to spin but there is too much resistance on the shaft for it to turn. If I turn the shaft with my hand I can feel it rubbing/scraping. If I turn the tumbler on and use my hand to get it started tumbling it will go for a while then eventually will stop turning after a few minutes. How long do these tumbler motors typically last with continuous use?

I've used my HF tumbler for a long time and the motor seems to be ok. The only change I've made is using Lorton belts instead of HF Chinese rubber. Have you oiled the motor bearing and the bearings on the shafts the barrel sits on? I've noticed the latter need oiling every few days with continuous operation. I've also found it helps to be sure the machine is balanced. I have no idea how long the motors will last. You can find Lortone replacement parts, including motors, here: therockshed.com/partslortone.htmlI know Lorton belts fit the HF and maybe some of the other parts will too. I've heard of people replacing HF motors with Lortone motors but they probably cost as much as a new HF machine. I have a hunch you can find an inexpensive American-made motor that will work. Good luck.

I would say make your own. You pick a good motor, bearings... All quality stuff. A PVC barrel again the size you want.
A homemade tumbler turns a barrel the same as a factor made tumbler... But costs less. Plans are all over the Internet and this website.

First, I want to thank everyone who replied, I got very busy with school and haven't been able to keep up here like I would like.
My HF tumbler was purchased new through Amazon.com. I don't have the box or anything other than the manual and extra belts anymore so I don't know if HF will be willing to deal with it. I would very much like to get it running again if it isn't too expensive. It looks like swapping the motor our wouldn't be too big of a job.
I have thought about building my own tumbler but I have very little experience building things and it seems like it might be beyond my current capabilities. Maybe if I could find some simple plans I would give it a try. I have no idea where to find motor, pulley, belts... It would be a nice accomplishment to build my own for sure.
