So I just got back from an afternoon walk to get away from my office for a bit. I found this about 1/4 mile from the office (in Latham, NY). I'm thinking calcite? It is 4.5 inches in diameter and weighs 3 pounds. I like the pinkish-orange ring in it.

Calcite will fizz when a drop of vinegar is applied.
