Indian Pass Rd usually good for dumortierite. Interesting coral reef just north of inspection station north of there going towards Palo Verde. Monument and wide shoulder on West side of road, reef across the street on east side.

When we go to the Cargo Muchacho Mtns, it is usually with our prospecting association, and we are looking for gold! Would imagine there are mostly quartz-type rock, also some basalt. There is also kyanite to be found. Indian Pass Rd is another story. Lots of good rocks to be found there. Here's a couple links to old threads of mine about the areas Gold prospecting in Cargo Muchacho MtnsWhat you'll find at Indian PassGood luck and have fun!

Thanks for the reply's, we found some dumortierite on indian pass road about 6 miles in,very hard to find. Today we went to the gold basin mine and found some interesting stuff, lots of quartz crystals and some malaicate and a 600 lb calcite bearing rock ( took 1 hour to get that sucker in the truck) tomorrow we will try to locate the reef, and head to Palo Verde. BTW I would like to give a shout out to people at gold rock what an amazing family! some of the best people I have met. bill

That malachite at gold basin is really bitchin. Metallic copper included and super nice patterns.
Keep having fun amigo! Hope the kings get the cup again!
The rock shop in Palo Verde is a trip with all the petrified trees and such...
There is a spot of thunder eggs on the road to Palo Verde on the east side. Easy digging and easy access. Can't tell u how to find it. Sorry.

Scott, he could just look for the smashed reptile crate with tools and thundereggs in it unless it already grew legs and walked away ;-) I agree, the rock shop is a cool place to visit and the guy is really friendly.

Too bad about the rock shop. He is a really nice guy. Gave us directions to his secret wood site. I don't remember the exact location so didn't include. One of the many turnouts on the road running up the river on AZ side. There is a tunnel like hole through the brush you have to crawl through. There was an old tire there that Kenny (rock shop owner) used to roll big "ironstone" logs out. Walking up the canyon you find the ironwood as well as river tumbled agates of many colors. As the canyons still see rain runoff the agates are not coated with desert varnish like Pebble Terrace. Didn't know you were going to Palo Verde or would have recommended Pebble Terrace. A few miles West of Palo Verde on road to Opal Hill Mine you drive through a vast area of river rounded rocks. It is an ancient course of the Colorado River. Many agates and marine fossils. You can find some really nice rock but everything coated with desert varnish so except for exterior fossil imprints you can't tell what you pick up until you chip away the surface.
