Ive got a co-worker that wants me to make him some rings and was wondering if anyone has some tips on making them. I just bought a set of 15 diamond holesaw bits for $17 on amazon that i'm hoping will at least do for the inside hole and maybe cut the outside on a trimsaw.

I have spoken at great length to Jim about this topic. At least as it relates to materials.
Anything but jade and jade related materials is a fail. Agates destroy core bits and the rings shatter easily.
Cut your slabs the width of the ring, core inner first, then core outer.

@wampidytoo has pictures on here somewhere. I've made of few with his help. I used jade, and Lawsonite (Blue G). Both worked well. Also did one in blue lace agate. It also worked well. However, while wearing it, I banged it on the edge of the sink. Broke. Diamond core drills (in water) were used for the initial step. Saving all those thick little disks --- for something or other.

@wyrocks changed his name. Hey Jim! Stone rings!
ETA Well, I guess he's not using that name, either.

Thanks for the link, the client is aware that they break easy but its a risk he is willing to take the way those were made are simple enough... his prices on the other hand.. not too sure about that... but if he / she actually gets that more power to them.

Wampidy made one for me...it was pink jade and hasn't broken to this day. Agate will eventually break but if you are aware the agate ring you are purchasing is not meant to be an heirloom it's no biggie.

Yeah, I told the guy that they will break more than likely after some time... theres always superglue though!

There was a shop near where I used to live that sold a lot of rings made with a variety of stones. They sold them with cords so they could be worn more like pendants and warned people not to wear them on their fingers as they would break.

I still have the one that Jim wampidytoo gave to me.
I am sure he posted other threads on this topic, but here is one he did of a ring he made with several different colored layers of stone: Trying to be humble about this ring
Yes, Jim, I still have it. And yes, I realized a long time ago that the act of you giving it to me did not mean we were engaged, lol.

Also for agate rings if someone was to wear one how long would you expect it to last? the person understands that they are delicate.
