I have been told that it is a synthetic quartz that was made for NASA. However, it has a conchoidal fracture. The manufacturer is somewhere in western Oregon. Occasionally, I will see end cuts and corners available for sale starting at $3/lb. It is great material for doublet and triplet caps.
