Amazing examples. Stunned at the variety of woods. Skin looks perfect, insides a mish mash. Tantalizing mystery was the skin that had to be wood, insides crazy. The hexagonal is not near as common as the random patterns at Zapata area anyway.

I'm not a pet wood collector or aficionado, so maybe this knowledge comes with time spent collecting woods. So I gotta ask ... how do you know the above slabs are (were) wood? Were I the one to have slabbed the majority of those, there is not a chance in a hundred that I would have even considered them to be petrified wood. A couple of them I might have guessed right, but with many of them I would have just said "that's a cool looking rock" and moved on.
Probably why I don't collect wood! (yet)

Some could be wood casts where outside shape preserved and centers filled in later. How the centers filled and broke up and reformed inside casts without altering the outside is baffling.

Bob, a lot have indications of wood on the exterior though a lot look to be very water worn. Some, you have to look at very closely after cutting or windowing, and others are most definitely primarily a limb cast. You get used to making the IDs after you've collected and cut a lot like me. The casts more moss agate than pet wood in my book and some of those show no evidence they were ever wood, far as I can tell.

Man Brian, those to are real similar. Did I mix it up in my boxes and is that slab something I got from you *L*. That happens now and then as I have thousands of slabs. Here's another decomposed palm. If I ain't mixed up I got this one from Matt Dillon. I love the palm where fungus or whatever has got to it.....Mel

Watching learning. Thinking identifying petrified woods is like a pathologist identifying cancers. We sold a dog to a young Pathologist. He ID'ed cancers extracted from patients at various hospitals. He was payed $200 per ID. Many he had to do extensive research to make the ID. He worked under an experienced pathologist that had a large library of cancers in his mind from experience. David quoted the amount of $200 ID's he made in a day. The man makes a fortune because of his experience of making so many Id's over the years. After finding one type of pet wood several times the skin and the patterns from the multiple finds start to make enough evidence to draw a conclusion. captbob, that was how I figured out what some the rocks were wood. It was the first time ever for me.

Nice! That red one is a beauty and that first cast with plume is great. I have a couple of plumy casts from GW in my rock pile too....Mel

Some tiny hints of wood in those Jeremy. Lots of clear fill, nice.
