I brought a few buckets home from the rockhounding trip that jamesp and I took to Zapata Texas that I have been referring to as Oddities. Yeah yeah ... we were primarily after those fine Rio Grande agates, and James' case petrified woods; but I brought buckets of rocks home just because I thought they were cool looking.

Many of them I don't even have a clue what they are. I just like 'em!

Again, I have buckets full of these things. Took some pictures today while it was 80° outside of a bunch of them that were on the top layer of the buckets. Didn't want to spend too much time out there on the patio as it was kinda breezy and this is acorn year.*

*I have 11 oak trees in my yard. Every 4th year we get a banner acorn crop. I'm talking thousands and thousands of the darn things. Maybe up to ten times what we get the other years. SUCKS - unless one happens to be a squirrel. Which I am not. These things are falling from the trees now and being outside is an "at your own risk" kinda thing. Windy days my dogs are afraid to go out there! Damn things hurt when they hit ya.

Anyway here are a bunch of pictures of what I am calling the oddities from our trip.
Rio Weirdos just sounded more fun.

This first one obviously has some kinda fossil stuff going on. What I find odd is that the interior seems to be pet wood. I dunno. But it's pretty cool! Several of pictures of this one.

looks like petrified snake skin!

but it's the inside that is the weird part. wood?

Moving along. Again. I have no idea what some of these are. 5 different rocks next

three of this next one - same rock, just a lot going on here. Have several of these mish mash type rocks.

Picked up a bucket full (or more) of conglomerate / brecciated rocks - because I LIKE THEM!

Some woods - didn't bring much of this home because I don't collect wood. Guess I do now...

a couple woods? Don't know, or care. Actually have a bunch of "wood" in the buckets. Tumbler fodder.

Especially that first one. What a show. Breccia city. Cycad ? This one is way out, love the light color. Vomitite ? just kidding Will these be sawn ? How could you not ?

Wow! Freaking awesome post! I've found some of those same types myself. My favorites are the fossil chert, the oddball that looks like it's an agatized septarian, the cherts with the nice Liesegang lines and the awesome banded agate. Some of those 'woods" towards the end are banded rhyolite and that last one is orbicular rhyolite. You're gonna love it when you cut that multicolored chert with the breccia and shells, 16th pic. I've slabbed a couple of those and they are really nice. Amazing how many breccias and puddingstones are down there isn't it? I never have decided what those purplish ones are. Find a lot of them and they are quite colorful, often almost like stained glass windows except not clear colored quartz. I found one that was solid light purple. Some tend to be kind of fractured in layers but I guess it's either an agatized quartzite or maybe chert or weird colored chalcedony....Mel

Peruvian and probably other tropical forest dwellers have a high incidence of serious injuries resulting from fallen fruits and nuts.
Tall trees and giant fruits = bodily damage.

We have many red oak varieties, much fewer white oak varieties.
Oaks are an interesting study here, so many complicated sub-categories traceable by region and crossing.
20 basic oaks in Georgia, 19 in florida. But many sub categories growing in one county or a small zone.

Hey, I've got one of those! Friend found it SE of San Antonio.

I guess the wood looking things are some sort of sea plant / coral?

Wonder if these types will take a polish. Have several that are preshaped by Mother Nature that I could just toss in a barrel as is. May give one a try this week to see how they do.

Not sure on that one Bob. Rhyolite is a volcanic rock that usually has flow patterns, orbs etc that formed during formation. Lots are banded and some are solid too and I don't see why they could not be broken up and reassembled as a breccia. Many are hard and fine grained enough to be called jasper but some are microscopically porous and will suck up water rather than having it bead up. You might have to cut it to see which you have....Mel
