I brought a few buckets home from the rockhounding trip that jamesp and I took to Zapata Texas that I have been referring to as Oddities. Yeah yeah ... we were primarily after those fine Rio Grande agates, and James' case petrified woods; but I brought buckets of rocks home just because I thought they were cool looking. Many of them I don't even have a clue what they are. I just like 'em! Anyway here are a bunch of pictures of what I am calling the oddities from our trip. Rio Weirdos just sounded more fun. This first one obviously has some kinda fossil stuff going on. What I find odd is that the interior seems to be pet wood. I dunno. But it's pretty cool! Several of pictures of this one. other end looks like petrified snake skin! but it's the inside that is the weird part. wood? That's it for this round. May take more pics tomorrow if I can find a hard hat. Thanks for looking! Hey, I've got one of those! Friend found it SE of San Antonio. I guess the wood looking things are some sort of sea plant / coral? Either way, your Rio Weirdos are Rio Awesome!!!! Thanks for taking the time to post! O - M - G !!! I think both of those fossils are about the awesomest most awesome fossils I have ever seen! Thanks t both of you for posting pics.
captbob, keep 'em coming! For you, Christmas came early. Woot!

Yes captbob. If it is grainy I think it is some kind of basalt. Only takes a matte tumble finish. Photos on old computer, it is broke. This is the same stuff if not mistaken. Seen it in green and yellow north of Alpine, Texas.

That fossil material is dank as hell! Is there a name for it besides Rio Weirdo? I'd like to find a nice specimen to buy.

Bryozoans and snails . the break in the rock makes the larger bryozoan look like wood . Awesome piece, looks like a good bit of quartz replacement

Never seen em, those off the charts. Especially that first one. What a show. Breccia city. Cycad ? Pretty sure that is wood, like shrinkwood. I have some just like that except it retained some annual rings on the reverse side. I think the wood dries, shrinks and makes those gaps that get filled with agate. And on the coral fossil piece, it looks like an agatized seashore where corals have piled up possibly from waves. The most amazing bunch of coral I have seen in a rock!!! I even think the long one inside that looks like wood is actually a long-tubed coral. That is a dream piece!

as a whole bryozoans are smaller than corals. the specimen here is good sized but they can be larger . im no expert either but have had hands on experience with both. if your experience is just browsing the internet, sometimes what you see is misidentified. i have seen bryozoans called corals , especially when being sold . coral sounds better .

I assume some of those will get cut but many are gorgeous specimens as found. The fossil exterior of your first piece is just spectacular.
And 80 degrees? I have frost on the inside of my living room windows.
I gotta get to Texas.
