Not content to do pierce work alone, I have taken up some etching. I have done some before, but not in combo with pierce work. What I like is the texture. It is a nice contrast to the high polish on the front side. The only problem is that to make a key ring, I'll have to start with 18g rather than 20 because I like a deep etch which eats about half the thickness of it. This is for my BIL who is an unabashed crazy cat lady. Never mind how scratchy it looks- I have to do the final polish. It does have a very high polish which is a bi**h to photograph. I cut it and drilled the hole first.... then decided to do the etch so I had to mask the edges and back. Worked very well. I love the texture and I may patina if I can do it without getting it in the front. It's too thin for a pocket keychain now, but quite fine to hang a shed key or something on a rack. I'll have some 18g tomorrow when I'll do some more. My BIL has been trying to etch pcb's. I can't wait for him to see this and say- How the hell did you do that??

OK, got the patina done and etched another one. The image is after I have removed the resist and nothing more.... yet. I painted on the LOS gel and taped the front. The red color comes off with a little steel wool.

Very cool. Is it all done by masking the area you do not want etched? The paw looks like the etch was brushed on and eats more where it is applied thicker?

We use a similar process on the steel molds we build for auto parts. We have an outside company acid etch the mold so that the plastic parts will have texture. Chuck

Chuck Yes, I use a laser printer to transfer lines to copper and then I can saw the lines or use the lines as a mask to etch. The solution is liquid, so I didn't brush it on. It just seems to start at the edges. I left it in for 2 hours. It's a long time but my acid was old and week. I like the deep etch for the random pattern.

So is the red what it looks like coming out of the acid? I really like these. I will have to do some more research now.

Wait?
Red is the resist?
What acid solution distance use?
HCl plus H2O2 is great... But you seem to have something simple and awesome!

It's reg copper underneath. Here's the video I found helpful, There's another one I have to try to find. edit Here's the other video. It is actually a video clip, but it shows how to suspend the copper in solution.

You definitely take it to the next step, you do some cool stuff!! ... Stop on over if you ever get bored, I still cut and grind rocks almost every minute that I'm home.
