Hi, I'm very new to he hobby and I've started out with a second hand Evans 3lb machine. I didn't get any instructions with the machine which was supplied with two 1.5lb Evans rubber barrels. I'm a little confused as to how the lids are sealed, when I unpacked them the lid was pushed down inside the barrel and the sealing "O" ring was pushed under the lip on the edge of the barrel and the top plate bolted into place. I assumed that this was the correct way to assemble and prepared my first tumbling batch. I stopped the machine after a couple of hours and unscrewed the lid to check for leaks, there was a lot of water and some grit between the inner and outer lid. Is this normal or have I got something wrong?
I'm sorry if this has been dealt with before but I've not been able to find anything by searching the forum.
Many thanks in anticipation of your replies!
..... Phil.

Doesn't sound like Lortone to me. The Lortone barrels are very easy to understand and assemble. Just looking at them makes it clear. The lid fits in the barrel (and there is really only one way for it to fit). Then the metal top goes over this and is attached with a washer and nut. Unfortunately I have no idea what the Evans barrels or tumblers are like.
I have never had any problems with Lortones leaking and I think they are known for leaking less than other brands (at least in the smaller sizes).

The Lortone barrels don't have an "O" ring. As Dotty said, the inner lid just rests on the lip of the barrel and is covered by the metal piece. Tightening the nut on top snugs the whole thing together. Never had a leak issue. There may be a small amount of grit and water/slurry that makes its way onto the lip, but I don't know if that's just from pulling the lid off or what. Can you post a pic of the barrel disassembled?

Was there an O ring in each barrel? Maybe it is a spare drive pulley belt?

Yes, both barrels had an "O" ring, the drive has a toothed belt. I'm beginning to think that the "O" ring just goes under the outer cover, I just did an experiment along those lines with the second barrel and it seems to be more watertight but this increases the length and two barrels assembled like this are too long to fit on the rollers, all rather confusing

O.K. I think we can call this one solved, I've run the machine overnight with the barrel assembled with the "O" ring under the outer cover and no leaks! I'm sorry to have bothered you all with something I eventually sorted myself but it helped just to put the word out there. Many thanks for your replies,it's nice to know there's plenty of help out there, as I said earlier I'm very new to this hobby and I've lots to learn so I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again!
