Just saw this article about a shooting on Falcon Lake near Zapata Texas. Not many details in the story. H captbob had me shot for staying 10 days longer than him. ZAPATA, Texas — Authorities continue to look into how two Texas fishermen were shot while boating on a border lake. One died from wounds while the other remains under medical care. The shooting took place Tuesday night on Falcon Lake, information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Zapata County Sheriff’s Office revealed. Preliminary information indicates that 26-year-old Oscar Garza and 21-year-old Javier Gonzalez were operating a boat in Falcon State Park, a famous fishing spot on the border with Mexico. According to Zapata County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ray Del Bosque, the events that led to the shooting remain unclear–but another craft approached the men prior to the shooting. A confrontation took place, prompting the boaters to flee while the alleged attackers opened fire–striking Garza while Gonzalez dove into the water to avoid the hail of bullets. The boat used by the shooting suspects is believed to have fled back to Mexico. Sheriff’s investigators are waiting to perform an official interview with Gonzalez until he is released from a local hospital for hypothermia treatments. Falcon Lake is an area commonly used by the Los Zetas cartel to smuggle large quantities of marijuana and illegal immigrants into Texas. The area is immediately south of Zapata and Starr Counties. Falcon Lake is also the area where Los Zetas cartel gunmen murdered David Hartley in 2010 while he and his wife were jet-skiing, Breitbart Texas previously reported. Hartley and wife Tiffany had been enjoying the lake until Los Zetas gunmen tried to kidnap them and began to shoot as the couple fled. David was struck by the gunfire, while Tiffany managed to escape. Falcon Lake is also the same area where in 2015 Texas State Troopers on gunboats captured a top Los Zetas commander who was trying to sneak into Texas, Breitbart Texas reported. In that case, authorities arrested Jose Manuel “Z-31 or El Borrado” Saldivar Farias, a regional commander for the Los Zetas Cartel, as he rode a boat into the Zapata County.

captbob had me shot for staying 10 days longer than him. It was getting very close to that! Google says the Falcon State park is down by the dam. Story says this happened Tuesday night. Wonder what time. I'd sure be off that lake by dusk.

Still thinking of moving there jamesp? Atlanta has all the trouble you want starting 7 miles north and 10 miles east from the crib here.

Yes it appears civilization is coming apart at the seams.
Desperate people do desperate things.

Not sure the nature of this incident but a very good chance that it's the drugs. Not sure how to effectively solve that issue. It seems that any solution that only tries to address the supply side without addressing the demand side is going to be very expensive and very in-effective.
Don't want to turn this into a discussion on the Drug Problem, that's a minefield.

But if the demand went away that would be the end of the problem. - Then less danger collecting the pretty rocks, ranching, fishing . . .

Agree, however effectively ending demand is easy to say, not as easy or risk-free to implement. Legalization, well maybe. Then again Alcohol is legal and look at the deaths on the highways due to that. Saw the sign yesterday on the Interstate, over 3300 traffic deaths in Texas so far this year and a high percentage of those are Alcohol related. Just don't know.
Bottom line, I really don't care what a person does to himself, personal choice, that's all good. But when you drive under the influence and put me at risk, or break into my home looking for drug money, or anything that risks other people then it is my concern.
Very complicated, I just want to collect rocks and enjoy my family.

The Wall
Trump says he will build a wall.
Where?
It may be awhile (if it ever happens), but a wall could mess up some rockhounding depending on where it is built. Maybe we should pay Mexico to build it on their side of the river. Why mess up our aside when the problem originates on their side?
Rockhounding the Rio Grande could become a thing of the past in the next couple/few years.

The Wall will most likely never happen for the reasons that it's very expensive and would not really work anyway. Where there's a will there's a way. The "will" needs to be removed.

Amazed that the druggers would dare use that wide lake for their activities. Seems like you would be a sitting duck. However: I watched a DEA boat with a tall structure built on top of it with a man watching the water from 12-15 feet up over front of boat. Running the shore. I think they sink dope close to the edge of the lake and attach a small float to it. Allowing people on our side to fetch it. Send the GPS coordinate and perform a little Geocache. That made me nervous. Again saying that the people on our side are the ones to fear equally or more than those crossing over the border. The drug activity simply creates a dangerous situation. On both sides. captbob, looking back I was surprised at the amount of open gates along the lake. Nary an open gate on the 30 minute ride in on the gravel road... Most lakes with private property fronting a lake is fenced and strictly enforced. Something fishy going on there.

Legal drugs stops this entirely. Nothing for cartels to smuggle and protect.
Those guys witnessed something..... Stupid war on drugs killed them.

All drugs must be legal. All will be cheap, safe and regulated and taxed. Otherwise a black market exists for those parasitic, innocent bystander murdering, assworms to exploit. They simply switch from pot to coke or heroin or speed or what the oops ever else is left to smuggle. This news story doesn't exist in a "legalised drugs" world. Legal drugs saves innocent lives!!
