Anybody have any suggestions on a good place to get 1000 grit and Tripoli? The Rockshed carries the Tripoli at a good price but he is out of stock. He has the 1000 grit in aluminim oxide. Do they make 1000 grit in Silicon Carbide?
Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob, I have the new Kingsley North catalog and they have 1000 grit silicon carbide, 1# $12.00, 5# $50.00. and they have listed "alumina powders" not by grit but by micron size.(whatever that is ) Hope that helps. cookie

Wow Cookie, I had no idea 1000 grit was so expensive. Thats more than I pay for polish. With shipping that would be well over $15 a pound. I've been going from 500 to pre-polish and thought another step would give me a little better shine. I would need to use about 1/2 pound in my 6 pound tumbler. Thanks though, I forgot about Kingsleys. My first 6# batch should be coming out of polish in a few days. I'll wait and see how that comes out before I make a decision on adding another step. Bob

You might want to try SISA as an alternative to Tripoli. My understanding is that they are both essentially powdered quartz (so don't use them on really, really hard rocks). SISA seems to be always used as a pre-polish, Tripoli must be somewhat finer, as it seems to be used sometimes as pre-polish and sometimes as polish.
