Does anyone have any experience with the Dremel 220-01 drill press? Based upon the online reviews I am hesitant. Specifically will it hold the Dremel unit firm enough to function as a drill press for drilling cabs. Any input welcome. Thanks....Cheers link

I bought one for that specific task - drilling cabs. I had two main issues - I felt it was kind of a pain in the butt to deal with in general - a bit on the lightweight and wobbly side. I felt like I have much more control over the hole - moving the bit up and down to allow the debris to escape without having too much pressure when bearing down and causing bits to snap. After snapping a bit off in a rock I went back to doing it by hand.
Since then I bought a Foredom with foot pedal and flex shaft and it's been a night and day difference.

Perfect - thanks Tommy . I figured as much but wanted someone to validate for me. I need to just bite the bullet and get a Foredom and its drill press attachment. Which Foredom did you go with? If I recall correctly from other threads I am looking at a TR so I can use it for carving as well. Always wanted to carve thick cabs - especially like the MT Agate carve: get rid of fractures and let in light. Cheers (PS Glad your recovered...)

I got the SR 2230 off Amazon. I'm thinking of upgrading the plastic foot pedal but other than that it's amazing.
(ETA: thanks for the well wishes!)

The Foot Pedal device will not work very well for me at the moment. Any recommendations for the model Dremel for just hand drilling?
Thanks

I use a dremel for most all my rock stuff. I have a extension cable but didn't put the dremel far enough away from my work. After a month or so it stopped working...? Someone posted about there tumble motor stopped and a recommendation to soak it in mineral spirits, because of the rock dust. So I soaked my dremel in mineral spirits because rock dust could have caused my dremel to stop. It fixed the problem and is still going strong. Just something to watch for, rock dust.

I'm happy with my Dremmel drill press. I use it to drill holes in pudding stones to make beads. They are not deep holes. I use cheap 1 mm bits from Kingsley North. Sometimes I get one hole, sometimes a dozen before the bit breaks. I'm able to drill from both sides fairly accurately. I've done 400- 500 so far. Pudding stone beads

Pudding stone beadsAwesome task Rob you must have the patience of a saint. Sorry I missed that thread originally. My one last thought on the subject of the drill press - If I were going to go back to using a drill press to drill stones it wouldn't be a dremel attachment - the dremel head unit is pretty challenging at times - literally takes three hands like someone else said. Real drill presses - even table top models - are really very affordable used. I see them for sale all the time on CL and at garage sales. My son brought me a nice heavy duty belt driven Craftsman unit he got for next to nothing at a garage sale and I drilled holes with it for a while. Same result though - drilling by hand is more controllable and you don't end up with 20 rocks in the basement with bits stuck in them heehee.

My daughter was going to get one for DH for Christmas until we read the amazon reviews. Apparently it is best to mount the ething and to have a dedicated dremel for it because it's a pain to mount and unmount the dremel. Also, it seems the tolerance is pretty big, which could pose a problem for drilling in rock. (Think broken bits.) The reviews were enough to nix the idea.
I got my SR series Foredom at Otto Frei. They usually have the best prices on them. Not always, but it's hard to find a sale for them. DH makes miniature models and wanted something much smaller than my foredom to work with. But, we do share when needed.

bsky4463 I'm curious what did you end up doing if anything? The reason I'm asking is I found my dremel mount drill press hidden on a top shelf in the garage - I thought I got rid of it already. It's not in the best/cleanest condition and it might not have all the parts it came with - but if you want it it's yours for the cost of postage. If not I'll do something else with it as I have no use for it.

bsky4463 When I took a carving class, it was suggested we get the YX Foredom. I also want to add carved elements to cabs. That's TX, not YX. Been happy with it. I also bought a holder for the flex shaft. Holder clamps onto the desk. Must match handpiece to holder. This setup frees both hands to hold the stone much like a Genie in that respect.

Tommy many thanks for the offer, very kind. However, I will very respectfully and appreciatively will decline. I am in a holding pattern for a foredom w drill press accessory which I plan to acquire in the spring. Fishing season on the coast is almost upon us so I will be outta my rock shop from several months. Pat thanks for the insights. Cheers
