Greetings All, Tomorrow I will drive down to Ocean Springs, MS for the weekend (complicated travel/vacation stuff going on this summer). Last time I was down that way a couple of weeks ago I noticed (on a Sunday) a new (well I'd never seen it before) rock shop on Highway 90 in Ocean Springs. Eagle's Nest. Of course being a Sunday it was closed. BUT, they'll be open tomorrow so I'm going to bring some pieces of my South African rough and see if they are amiable to a trade. And see if they do any slab sawing. It could be I leave a couple of chunks with them to cut for me, maybe they will take some of the slabs in trade or something, if not I'll pay for some sawing just to get some nice slabs. Finally a chance to "show-off" my rocks For what it's worth, I've already started saving up for another big purchase, either from Gerdus again or perhaps from the Brazilian company VRStones. Depending on how patient I am I might try to save up enough to get a 100 kg of each of 9 or 10 kinds of rough to make up a metric ton, or I could get impatient and just get 500 kilos each of blue and green aventurine for, oh, about $1,000. I could do that by the end of summer, if my wife lets me... WilliamC William C

Greetings All, I am happy to report that I had a very good time visiting Eagles Rock shop and talking with Herschel, the owner. They've only been open in Ocean Springs, MS for about 6 months, this is Hershchel's first rock store, and his wife (Joan I think) works with him. He was quite happy to swap some rough with me, I got a block of jet over a cubic foot in size, a couple of stunning pieces of rainbow-banded calcite, three large pieces of pink alabaster, a 12 lb chunck of pink serpentine, several pieces of goldsheen and rainbowsheen obsidian, and a nice pile of petrifed wood in exchange for some of my rocks. And he has an 18 inch Lortone saw so next time I am going down that way I will bring a couple of pieces of leopardstone and verdite for him to cut for me. What great fun Someday I promise I'll be getting a digial camera then I'll be posting more often and with pictures. Seems like there's lot's of rockhounds hanging out here these days, the more the merrier! Happy Lappy-dary, WilliamC

Greetings All,
I brought down a couple of pieces of each of butterjade, leopardstone, verdite, and carnelian and a chunk each of autumn jasper and koi jasper. Herschel has emailed me and is interested in more trades, I will definitely bring him some more rocks next time I'm down on the Gulf Coast. I will also leave a couple of pieces for him to cut for me so I can start getting some slabs, especially of the leopardstone and verdite; I can't break the big pieces up with a hammer to save my life, but I bet they would cut pretty easily since they are relatively soft.
The very next purchase I must make is a good set of scales, I can get some electronic postal quality scales from Ebay that will go up to 260 lbs for only $75 or so and it's nuts for me not to have one to actually weigh the rocks I want to trade and sell. Well, we have a 3-week vacation to the Grand Canyon/California starting this Saturday so it will have to be after we get back from that.

Hi William, I have a VERY old postal scale but I trust it to be percise. I bought some agate from a guy and when I got home re-weighed it and he had his thumb on the scale I weigh everything, rocks, grit, and on that scale I can adjust for the weight of whatever I'm measuring in so I know how much fill I need. Youre gonna love having it. Good luck. cookie

william - i didn't get to meet hershell but his wife was there and showed me your rocks. the pictures don't do them justice! what a fun shop. she says she teaches wire-wrapping and her husband teaches classes to make cabachons and/or faucet (it was very hard to listen with that many rocks around ;D). i hate i'm so far away. i think my child touched everything at least twice making her grandma a wreck because i was in my own little rock lusting world. those humongous sliced geodes with the amethyst crystals from brazil are awesome ! i got some bloodstone, amethyst, and cherry agate. my child got a birthstone ring and a little carved horse. i'd have gotten more and stayed longer if grandma hadn't been with us. she's not a shopper and was ready to hit the road. thanks for telling us about it. kim
