Glad you made it thru the gauntlet walte1fr. Welcome to the forum. Here is a link to some photos of fine rocks to tumble. Not familiar with the supplier, but he has decent photos. I would stay away from apache tears and amethyst until you have some experience.

Gauntlet? That was a romp through a pre-school playground compared to when I'm on a roll. Been on my best behavior with Santa watchin'!

I had a couple bags of mixed rocks from TheRockShed when i first started. The vast majority of it is 6-7 hardness and tumbles very well. Its much better quality than some mixed rough I have bought from Amazon that had a lot of softer rock in it. This is what he lists as in the mixed bag:
Rose Quartz, Green Aventurine, Lace Agate, White Quartz, different types of Jasper, Pudding Stone, Moss Agate, Sodalite, India Tree Agate, Petrified Wood, Turritella Agate, Prairie Agate and others.
I went through the bag and separated them out and then looked at them on the web. I was able to identify most of what was in the mixed bag by just looking on TheRockSheds web site at the rough he sells, but not everything. If i recall correctly, the Sodalite is the only thing that came in my bags that ground down to next to nothing due to its softness. The Turritella Agate is a cool stone that takes a nice polish. It has shells all through it that make some really nice patterns.
I personally like tumbling Petrified wood and Montana agates because I feel like they are pretty easy to tumble, take a nice shine, and have interesting patterns. I like tumbling everything though and feel like I learn something new from every batch I tumble. Trial and error is part of the fun for me.

Try to stay with only hard rocks...agates, jasper, Quartz, petrified wood.... Better end results.
