Santa gave me this rock book so maybe I will learn to ID my own rocks. Hope Santa is not going to hold his breath and wait. I will read the book and do my best. Nice color photos in the book and I am a picture type of guy. LOL

Pictures are great but don't tell you much about the occurrence, habit, hardness, SG, refractivity. Program yourself to read just one rock type before bed each night and it will soak in while you sleep. Try to recall the essentials in the morning. When you can, move on one. If not, re-read. Try to get off page 1 by the end of the week !

Most of the rock books show pictures of ideal specimens. Don't expect the ones you find to look nearly as nice.

Santa was good to you - wish I had thought to ask for a new one. I bought my copy of The Audubon Society Field Guide in 1981, so I know it is outdated.
