I am having trouble finding a matching pic on the web and I'd like to be able to answer the question 'what is it?' Any help? Local KY find.

Definitely a rugose coral of some type ( horn coral group). I'm far from an expert but it looks somewhat similar to Entelophyllum rugosum...Mel

Eridophyllum seriale, from your link. Looks like a winner. Thanks for the heads up, I must have missed that website when searching.

I hope you will find some small pieces for the tumbler. You should get some great structure when polished. I know you are not into heating, but the color of that coral would probably put on a show.
That one belongs on a shelf.

Outside of Clarksville TN there was a roadcut on the 101 that had tons of that. They removed it all so as to keep collectors from getting it. I still found some in 9-15. Gave it to friends.

Eh, horn coral, I've came upon them before. Uncommon, for sure, but to the trained eye one can spot a horned coral from a good distance in a creek, pick one up, marvel over it, consider its worth, and finally take it home.
Randy, we could schedule a trip before I go somewhere for a month. I don't know about your schedule, but I'm not terribly busy. Plenty of creeks here in Rockcastle and in Lincoln counties, the possibilities of great finds are endless...
