I ordered a set of bail making pliers from an Ebay vendor who is based in Grand Rapids Mi. about 40 miles down the road last year on the 28th of december. Instead of sending the package from G.R. Mi. to Whitehall Mi. using the U.S.P.S., the vendor used UPS So I go to UPS (United Parcel Service) tracking site and enter my tracking number. It worked there. The package went and spent a day somewhere in Ohio before being assigned back to the G.R. P.O. Said the package was given to the P.O. and should arrive on Wednesday. As if I haven't had enough problems with just Ebay lately. Man this order was really a joke. Just my luck the pliers will be damaged. If you mail something here and its not in by noon it will go to Mpls 180 miles away even if its just going in town. They took our mail sort away up here so it takes 3 or 4 days to go a couple of miles even priority. It will go faster across country. I think we should put our govt in charge of health care or something .... maybe amtrak.

I know the post office gets a bad rap, but I would rather have them any day of the week over UPS. I have had more problems and slower deliveries with UPS than I have ever had with 10x the packages with usps. That being said, my actual local UPS delivery people are wonderful. They have been on my route so long that they know us and where to put packages. They get out of the truck, up the stairs and place my packages inside my screened mudroom. My old mailman did that, too. But we have gone through so many since then.
My favorite is the system called, I think, mail innovations. Where they start out ups and end up at the PO for home delivery. Those packages take the most insane routes. I had saved a couple of those routes for grins and giggles, but I think they are on Dh's computer now. Things go up and down the east coast before they ever land here for delivery.... crazy.

You know, I love the post office when I compare it to the other delivery folks or shippers. Just ordered 4 bottles of my favorite shampoo from one Amazon seller and a gun case from another. For some odd reason they billed me in three separate bills and supposedly sent the shampoo three bottles in one box and one bottle in another with the gun case. What I got bashed into my mail box was one box with one shampoo and the gun case and another box with two bottles of shampoo and a huge Ball Joint Service tool kit ( whatever the heck that is. I do no work on cars). Apparently somebody does not know the difference between a bottle of shampoo and a giant tool. Tried to straighten it out with Amazon with no success as half their links don't work right.
Then, I order a couple of cases of Ammo from another place. Think that one was UPS. Driver dropped it in front of the closed garage door and the wife pulled out after dark and ran over the carton because of course, rather than the porch or next to the garage door, he puts it right where the wheels go when she pulls out. Try sorting out a thousand rounds of run over ammo to see which are damaged and will likely explode in your gun.
Then there was the $140 new Stetson the fed Ex guy threw over the fence into the bushes in the rain. Sat there for days and it never has had a good shape. Did the same thing with a saddle. Those guys are fuggin idiots!. Post office looks pretty good to me..Mel

The P.O finds my house with all the junk Mail but if I order something they can't Find my house I use UPS I have had no Trouble with them Walt UPS is the one at fault in my case. There is no logical reason to ship something to another state, then back to the same state it came from only to be delivered to the local post office that the package (if the seller had any sense and used the USPS) should have shipped from directly to where it ended up today in Whitehall Mi. The Ebay vendor basically paid UPS to do a simple run around on getting things delivered quickly. All UPS did for that vendor was take his money and inconvenience the customer (me.) Even though I got $5.00 off the retail price of the same pliers from Hobby Lobby, I waited around while the UPS sent my package out of state, then back, then dropped off at the post office in the same city they took it from to be delivered by the USPS at it's final destination. What did that accomplish other than taking money for nothing. ? What are the chances that I will ever buy again from that vendor who lives so close? ZIP!!! Notta! Noway!!! That plus it took the vendor an excessive amount of time to ship it in the first place. That's three strikes in one transaction and the vendor is OUT!

I've had USPS deliver a package to Turkey instead of Denmark. Not sure how they confused the two. Shipping international is a crap-shoot.

I used to breed and sell live crayfish for the aquarium trade and I shipped all over the continental US, Europe, Germany and Alaska with success through the USPS. I used their service because it was far less expensive and faster than my experiences with UPS or Fed-Ex. Of course, there was the one instance when crayfish which were being shipped to Colorado went to Connecticut and were held there for several days before being forwarded to the correct address. The client said the smell was horrible when she opened the package, but since it was insured the post office got to pay for 3 $50 a pop crayfish and shipping fees for replacements. ;-)

Tank or pond? PM me if you desire. 30 years in the reptile trade. As for shipping stories. fossilman has one and greig has one too. Both coming to me in suburban LA.

I have usually had very good luck with USPS shipping cross border to the USA from Canada. I did have one package go astray (to Shotgunner) and am still trying to collect the insurance. They make it really painful, even though their own tracking says it disappeared in Chicago on its way to California. They keep asking questions and for me to prove it did not arrive, the value, receipts, pictures, etc. My guess is they keep trying until the average person gives up in frustration.
What I hate about common courier (eg UPS) on cross border is they charge a minimum $50 USD for brokerage and collect it COD when delivered - A horrible tax on a low cost item. Most low cost USPS shipments never get customs charges. The funny thing about my local UPS drivers is they are both horribly overweight and I live on a hill. They have to walk up an incline driveway and then 33 stairs to the house. No can talk when they get there because they are out of breath. They both now know to leave the package down by the garage or risk a heart attack and forgo the signature.

I think I did not have problems at the USPS because I had built such a great relationship with the workers at my local office. A stoplight finally replaced the blinking light at the crossroad in town a couple of years ago, so it is pretty easy to do that here. I always took my packages into the office in person and would have conversations about the items I was shipping. I would also open shipments of my breeders when they came in so the workers could see them. When I had the problem with the one shipment, I took my shipping receipt in and the postmistress looked everything up on the computer and did the paper work for me. She made sure I got everything back including the shipping fees within about a week. Sometimes living in small town can be a pain, but it also has its perks.

The problem is "Smart Post" from FedEx and something similar with UPS. Sender saves a couple of dollars and order gets delayed transfering between UPS or FedEx and USPS. I was forced to upgrade my Square to a chip reader last year. $50 but refunded if I used it a certain amount in first 90 days. This was fall so I ordered right away. They back ordered and finally shipped two weeks before we left for winter shows. Shipped cheap UPS to Mail from about 100 miles from me. Arrived the afternoon of the morning we left 2 weeks later. Couldn't use it during he first three months so their saving money cost me $50 extra. I have had more occasions where UPS routed packages to wrong locations and damaged more boxes than FedEx.
