I guess most of you have noticed that RTH is for sale. I just want to say that I hope the forum doesn't go anywhere.

Me too Tela! I hope that one of Mark's stipulations to the sale is that the forum stays up and running. My take from Mark's post was that he is selling the domain name - www.rocktumblinghobby.com along with the administrative rights to this forum. Pretty sure that Proboards forums are "free" to start one. I don't understand what business opportunity can come from having the domain name, but I'm not very computer (website) savvy. Make money by having paid ads on the website? I dunno. I don't even know what a facebook group is, so don't understand what is being offered there. What is a domain name connected to a forum such as this worth? I have absolutely no clue. 500 bucks? A thousand? 10k? I don't understand how it could be a money making venture. Lots of ads would sure suck! What kind of maintenance (time) is required to keep a forum such as this running smoothly? Is there technical computer upkeep necessary or does it pretty much take care of itself? Seems like it would be easy enough to buy the rights to a domain name, but the devil is in the details. I don't even know what to Google to figure this stuff out.

But, you did mention that the board is on proboards, which I had forgotten, so that might be a way to keep it running. I guess, maybe the admins would have to want to keep it going.

from wikipedia:
Although a number of subscription style features are optionally available, there is no obligation for any user to purchase anything from ProBoards. Forums are hosted for free, with no bandwidth or webspace cap, provided users allow advertisements to be displayed on their forum.
Are there ads here on the forum other than the Amazon box up top?
ETA: amazing what one can learn in an afternoon jumping around websites using Google.

There is opportunity. I hope Mark can get the backup copy of the archives and then the buy can own the content too. It will add value for sure.
As for revenue? 3-4000 uniques a month isn't advertising money material.
I've been encouraging a valued member here who would be a perfect owner to negotiate a deal. He wouldn't change much accept maybe appearance...
Please allow him anonymity until such time he pulls the trigger.

Yes - proboards is a free hosted forum. RTH.com drives the forum. The way it stands at the moment, the RTH.com owner would "run" this board as they choose. I would think it beneficial to keep it - without any shadow of a doubt.

I never heard of that bot but the results seem reasonable.

Found that and more yesterday. Thing is, this forum isn't under the RTH name. This forum is andy321. If the forum name can be changed to include the RTH I would imagine an increase in domain name value. Don't understand the pros and cons of a name change. Technical stuff above my pay grade! Then there is what is known as "good will". Well over a decade of such with the RTH brand. HARD to place value.

I never heard of that bot but the results seem reasonable. I got from that range to low 5 figures when I searched Scott. But again, that's for a domain name with a tenuous link to this forum - other than the name up top and the links from the www.rocktumblinghobby.com page. It's the "good will" that is the hard part to figure. Potential, or lack of, raises an eyebrow. Keeping forum up and running paramount. You should jump on this project!

In just my personal opinion, the F/B version of this site is very boring and slow with members posting and etc... Joined all four areas, quit two....... The F/B site will never have anything over this "Mother" site........So you people that don't use or have F/B,your not missing anything...

I don't do Facebook, but would view those groups as a way to bring folks here - not the other way around.
Figure any exposure to the forum is a good thing to bring in new folks. Whether that (F/B) works or not I dunno.

Presumably it will be bought by someone selling rock tumblers and/or rough, grit, etc.

Whether that (F/B) works or not I dunno. I don't do Facebook because it's pay to play. All your friends *don't* see your posts unless you pay for boosts, ads, etc. You are giving away your privacy so Zuck & his Ivy League buddies can get your data & have access to your every thought while the people you really want to see your posts don't often see them. As a final twist, the very person you hoped wouldn't see your post *does* somehow invariably see it. The person who says FB is boring isn't seeing the posts they expect to see. The sad thing is FB isn't boring. It's full of awful drama & misunderstandings for this very reason-- the wrong person somehow is always the person who ends up interacting with you. It's a no-win site as far as I'm concerned.

I would rather stoop to FB than loose this crowd.
