I wonder now that this forum home to the best rock hounds in the world is for sale !I feel that this group should some how ban together and buy this domain it should be owned by the people !? if this wonderful place fell in to the wrong hands it could be a real problem . so let the discussion begin

I think there has been more than a few private conversations about doing just that. The thing to do first would be to find out the cost.

Vote for positions only veterans of RTH should apply? A proper chain of command and a vote to the RTHer's in regards to any profits or changes, Not only do we have a wonderful hobby but possibly a wonderful site! Maybe im thinking ahead but possible RTH rock shows of vendors that consist of RTH members?  |

The site really isn't that great right now. I think it's main purpose should be to point people here in a much more obvious way. All I care about is this forum.

Thinking more about it...I think the best way to go would be for the bigger sellers here, roy , johnjsgems , rxscram and Tony (can't remember his board name) to name a few, to pitch in and make a purchase of the domain. They could sell their wares on the frontpage or even just advertise. This board has to bring a lot of traffic to the frontpage. If it doesn't- it could. The domain really could make some money for people. Then the forum can be left alone to be run as is. Maybe even do a few minor improvements, like maybe image hosting. I guess the new owners would have to decide who would do the actual running of the domain. Anyway, those are my thoughts. |

rockjunquie I put in a bid to Mark to purchase it, it wasn't enough. Hadn't thought about doing a joint purchase with roy, johnjsgems, and catmandewe though. I know Tony already has a well established Facebook group that he sells on, and I think Roy is an admin on that group as well.

I doubt there is much profitability and the running clearly isn't worthwhile or the owner wouldn't be looking for an exit.
The cost should be a reasonably small multiple of the profit, since the admin has to be offset as an overhead.
If the sale isn't to the satisfaction of the community, the value will be based on the historic content only.
Proboards are free to set up and a similar on-theme url can be purchased for not very much.
I'm hoping that the "wasn't enough" was a hold-out to sell to the long-term RTH activists rather than simply profiteering, notwithstanding the owner's right to profit.

So I use to sell, train and raise horses..... That being said, what is the value of a horse and how do you determine it??? Winning show record? Great pedigree? Perfect conformation? Great offspring??? All these have nothing to do with the animals value!!! The value is determined by what another person is willing to pay! What the general market will bear weighs in heavily.
Ok so what's that got to do with RTH??? Everything my friends... The old Lapidary/Gemstone Community Forum was for sale for quite a while last year.....no takers so the owner finally was gracious enough to give it to one of the members and now it is called The Lapidary Forum. I belong and enjoynit very much as are quite a few of yall. A very nice site....Did you know you can post pics directly to the forum there??
Therefore I advance the proposition that RTH will sell very when??? If yall do buy it then please fix the pic posting issue. Facebook as a example thrives off folks posting pics!!! I belong to several forums and RTH is the only one I cannot post pics to direct.
My suggestion is that with the downsizing of many things on the Internet caused by mega social media maybe....
Yep I am.gonna say it.
Maybe we should pursue combining with them other folks??? All successful thriving clubs, and make no mistake RTH is a club, share one great item that makes them successful.
You gotta have a person or core group to be willing to live, eat and breath the management and work and sacrifice daily to make it work and keep it growing forward.
That other forrum has proven to me that they r willing and able to handle the heavy load of computerize etc daily! In addition they saved and archived the entire old site with pics as the valuable resource it was and still is.
Just thinking out load guys n gals...I don't wanna lose yall. I worked too hard to get with, learn and love each and every one of you ground off fingertip, glue covered, doping ,rock snot addicted yahoos!!! LOL
