Hi all. Some of these I just thought were interesting to show you, some the dealer didn't know what they were. Pictures are all taken wet. 1. Needles blue agate. Came out a too green in the pic - the agate part is really more blue and the matrix is more brown than orange. My camera was accidently set on "vivid" color mode. First time I've seen it in the flesh. 2. Unknown agate - going to back this one with basanite and work around that healed fracture. 3. What kind of green jasper? The white lines look kind of like the feather markings in Jade, but I know it's not jade. Doesn't really look like plasma agate - the white lines are more, I don't know, intersections of green with green than a whole separate material like plasma agate. 4. This is an odd one. Hard to photograph - the slab was polished. It looks black, with these dark red/brown chatoyant fibers/veins. Scratches very easily with a pocket knife. Any ideas? 5. Unknown little guy with red plumes. White part is Translucent toward the top. 6. Fun little wood from somebody's dollar bin. 7. Is this what I hope it is? The price didn't reflect that, but it looks an aweful lot like Hell's Canyon . . . 8. Shrink wood, ain't she purty? Supposedly "bog wood from Minnesota" but I'm skeptical. 9. Chrysocolla in something. Gonna have to back it and maybe opticon it (gotta learn how to do that).

Don't know the others but #7 and #8 sure look like some of the Hell's Canyon wood I have. I was going to say the fracture surfaces in #7 look like it's opalized (H.C. is agatized), but then I remembered you said items were photographed wet, which would account for the shiny appearance.
Looks like you made some great buys. Hope you'll post an image of #2 when it's backed and cut. It looks to me like it has some very attractive potential.
I really, really liked the African dumortierite piece you posted too - better late than never. The silver work was great. It's a very fine pendant.

No.2 resembles sow belly agate from Colorado. I don't think purples are essential in this material. You scored pretty material.

Awesome wood specimens. That one sure does look like Hell's Canyon material #4 might be Minnesota silkstone but I would have thought it would be a bit harder....Mel

Thanks all. The dealer said #4 was Arizona Tigereye . . . but it doesn't look like the piece I got from Tony awhile back or anything Google turns up.

Hi Susan
RE: #2
I have a small hunk of clearish agate purchased from Tony 3-4 years ago.its nevada origin and the digger called it nevada OJ but its not jasper, just orbicular.
When the rain stops I will see if I can get a pic of it.

It looks like #2 is going to leave more questions! It also resembles a large chunk of agate I bought a few years ago out of the collection of a deceased husband & wife rockhound couple that started collecting back in the 1950s. And every summer for decades spent a month out west digging. They had a lot of old and unusual materials. Fortunately they labeled everything. The piece I got was labeled "Snowflake Agate/Oregon". The only other reference to this material I've ever been able to find was on the Agate Lexicon list which states the reference as: "Snowflake Agate, Oregon, no description, McDonald Ranch, Ashwood, Oregon, Lapidary Journal, v. 25, no. 3, p. 484." I'm not declaring that your slab is this same material but does look very similar.
I believe the Lapidary Journal, v. 25, no. 3 would be the July 1971 issue if anyone has that issue and wants to look it up and see if there are any photos to share?

Interesting, Thanks. "Snowflake Agate Oregon" totally stumps google, which is a rare thing these days! And thanks Shotgunner, interested to see the comparison.

Hmm. If you took that rock and sliced it paralell with the layers, rather than across, might produce something similar to what I have. Thanks for posting those!

#4 could be tremolite (asbestos). I've seen it some astoundingly chatoyant material cabbed, and yes it's very soft. Wear a mask!

#3 could be mariposite or listwanite. Mariposite if it's soft around a 5.

Dang! You got some sweet picks! Love all of the wood. I know you said it's not plasma agate, but it sure looks like some I've seen.
