I found this interesting black rock while hiking in the mountains west of Fort Collins, CO. It had eroded out of the trail and was right in the middle, obvious as day. I took a couple of cuts off it, because I can :-) It looks like there's two different materials one shiny and one with little sparkly bits in it, it kinda fell apart as I cut it. The hardness is 7, streaks black. I'm guessing tourmaline but I've never cut open one before.

Hmmm maybe I'll get the specific gravity next.
