I finally placed an order to Richardson's Rock Ranch at: richardsonrockranch.com/I ordered: 5 lbs piaute jasper 5lbs biggs picture jasper 10 lbs assorted agate tumbling rough All of the material was good quality and a lot better then others I have bought from. Their prices are the lowest I've seen and the service was great. Considering I'm in CT and they're in OR it only took 5 days to get here UPS Ground. I will definately buy from them again. Tom

I actually don't live too far from where they are located. Last summer we were thinking going there to dig for some thundereggs, but it just never happened. Maybe this summer...

Oh you lucky dog you!! If I lived near a place like that nothing there would be safe. It's the shipping that kills me and everything that's worth a hoot comes from out your way. Tom

As far as shipping costs go, yes they are really high on small orders. I have been using FedEx Ground, which was considerably cheaper than UPS. Especially, if the UPS store is used.
The postal service has come up with a priority flat rate box - $7.70 with a reasonable weight limit of 70 pounds (I think). The box size is 11 by 8.5 by 5.5 inches, which will hold quite a bit of rock. Not sure how long the postal service will continue this new service, but us rockhounds should take advantage of it while we can.
Hey Jackson, you should plan on going out to Richardson's Ranch. If you can, plan to go around the big rock pow wow in Madras (I think). They set up rockhounding trips to other places in the same area. Check out OreRockon.com. This site lists a bunch of places to rockhound in Oregon. He also sells stuff he has collected.

A word on ordering from Richardson's. If you tell them you want "cutting rough" instead of tumbling rough you "may" end up with a better material. Tom

Hey thanks for the advice on requesting slabbing material- Guess I never even thought of that- I mean If it is too big I still have "Cracky" (the 3 lb. estwing dolomite smasher) and some sharp chisels.
