Howdy! Has anyone had any success hounding in the Henry Mountains? I've heard of some nice petrified wood and coprolites coming out of that area, but have never been down there myself. I'm hoping to go in the next few weeks, but I'm sort of weary of some of the directions to possible locations that I've seen. If you've been out that way, and don't mind sharing some intel, I'd be very grateful! Thanks

I have been planning a trip to Utah and the ROCKHOUNDING Utah - A Guide to the States Best Rockhounding Sites is a big part of that.
The Henry Mountains are near Hanksville. There are at least a dozen documented sites on (and in the vicinity of) UT-24 in the area of Caineville to Hanksville in the above guide.
Sand Creek - Petrified Wood Blue Hills - Agate, Selenite Crystals Caineville - Agate Fossil Shell Hills - Devil's Toenails Old Notom Road 1 - Agate Old Notom Road 2 - Agate, Calcite Crystals Notom - Agate The Badlands - Agate Striped Mountain - Petrified Wood, Coprolites Bullfrog Turnoff - Agate, Petrified Wood Shootering Canyon - Agate, Coprolites Hansen Creek - Agate, Petrified Wood Fry Canyon - Petrified Wood
If you can't find a book, you may be able to locate these locations on Google Earth.
Let me know how the weather is in February. I plan on passing through in May.
Darryl.

I've never been out hounding that way. The rockhounding utah books are okay for getting you in the right areas generally but usually the specific site is well picked over. Also, verify that the land status hasn't changed before heading out to some of those places, as it changes from time to time...new claims, new national monuments...blm closures...etc.

Thanks 150FromFundy and Don for your replies! I do have the books, but I've found that they're not really reliable from my past experience following their directions. Or at least the directions lead to areas that have been pretty well picked over or have an abundance of material (devil toenails location). We did end up heading out President's Day weekend, but the weather was pretty bad for rockhounding the whole weekend. The plan was Escalante and the Caineville/Hanksville area Friday, The Henry Mountains Saturday/Sunday, and Yellowcat/Moab area Sunday/Monday. We ended up calling the trip off after a soggy/snowy day at the Henreys on Saturday. The drive back to Orem was solid rain on Sunday. We ended up swinging by several of the sites around Cainesville/Hanksville that are in the books, (Blue Hills, devil toenails site, Notom) but really just scratched around. At the Henry Mountains, we headed up to the Hansen Creek area and looked around as long as we could, but it began to snow and the road in had a section that was super muddy and rutted. We got out of there with so much mud stuck to my buddy's Subaru that it shook when you went above 60 mph. We didn't see anything at Hansen Creek besides a few small chips here and there, but we really couldn't spend much time with the weather the way it was. The road in to the Striped Mountains was much more doable and we spent the majority of Saturday collecting at that site. We did see quite a bit of pet wood, mostly in blacks and browns, but there was a bit of red to be had too. Also came out with with a few barite psudos, but didn't see a whole lot of coprolite...just a few small pieces here and there. Again it rained the whole time, and we were covered with mud by the end of the day. That was the end of the trip, but we'll be going back out again sometime to do Hansen Creek again and get out to Yellow Cat and Moab. 150FromFundy the weather should be great in May and it should've been good in February but we've had way more precipitation than normal. Let me know where you're thinking of going when you pass through and I'd be happy to help with with any info I have.

I'm staying out of the hills until the ground is drier. I would love to escort some RTHers to a couple of agate and Jasper sites close to Cedar City and Enterprise Utah when the weather gets more predictable. Lynn

I know Tony Funk catmandewe & Diane drocknut have asked me about hounding near Cedar City. I'd love to host a few crazy RTH rockhounds here when the weather gets better. Let's keep this topic alive & see if we can pull it off. Lynn

Since I live in Cedar City & have offered to guide a few crazy RTHers to a couple of local hounding sites, keep me informed of your schedule. My schedule is pretty open, so I can accommodate everyone else's schedule. Lynn
