Put the cover on my little hothouse this morning.This is my 43rd season. Sad thing is only a couple of us left in the area that have one.No youngsters go into it. Too much work I guess. I work mine with a shovel,keeps me in shape,I hope.  Will fill it up this week   Onion bed. My first planting got killed by a hard freeze,first time this happened.This was second go around. When are your tomato plants going in the ground? Will plant some of mine in a couple of weeks in a frost/bird protected enclosure. Count the days until the harvest. What variety do you grow?

H These will probably go in around the middle of March,depending on the 10 day forecast then.They will have bloom clusters,sometimes little tomatoes on them when I do.I plant the Celebrity variety mostly,with a few Early Girl,and a few Sweet 100s.I jumped the gun last year,and freeze got a lot of them. Celebrity, Bella Rosa and Sweet Chelsea here. Late Frosts, hot Summer weather, Birds and the neighbors growing Pine Trees all work against my crop.
Too bad tumbler slurry is not good for Garden, I would have bumper crops.

Celebrity, Bella Rosa and Sweet Chelsea here. Late Frosts, hot Summer weather, Birds and the neighbors growing Pine Trees all work against my crop. Too bad tumbler slurry is not good for Garden, I would have bumper crops. H I dumped all my slurry in mine for the last 10 years,unless one of the rare times I used borax. |

snuffy may already have tomatoes turning red. Hottest Feb. we have ever seen here in Georgia. Got spring fever.

Mine are still going from last year! Only had two nights where it got cold enough to freeze the plant tips just a little.
Picked these a week ago, before one of the last big rains. 
Too much water is a bad thing! they split, and the cracks turn black. But these were still edible. Yummy! Nothing like a home grown 'mater. |

Go for it Snuffy, still can taste that awesome chili that you cooked when I came to visit. Our tomato season was rubbish this year due to too many cool days.

Well I hate to say our last frost date is June 10th. We got up to 20 today and suppose to be in the single digits. I am depressed now. When I owned the green house we would open the first weekend in May. Frost is a greenhouse owners friend.

21 Tomato Plants in the ground. Okra seeds starting to sprout in the the 4 inch planter pots, will not set out until early April. Neighbor gave me 6 different Tomato varieties to try. need to find room. Will cut the top of all the Pepper Plants today to help them bush out more.
Need to get moving, I am late for Jim's class today. I forget, is it Horticulture?, Tumbling with Grinding Wheels?, How to use Aluminum Oxide?, Aquatic Adventures?, Heat Treating techniques?. My course load is way too heavy, may have to drop something.

Possible frost in the morning. Little tomatoes on the vines. Last year thought I would be ok,not !! Froze everything down. But I can rest well tonight.    snuffy |

Exceedingly warm winter. Plants are way further along than ever in 25 years.
My frost blanket entails raising the water over the tops of my aquatic plants. Cheating...

My frost blanket entails raising the water over the tops of my aquatic plants. Cheating... There wasn't a heavy frost,but enough to have ice on top of the covers over them.Nurseries are sending out plants earlier than they used to it seems.If the weather cooperates,can have a good early crop. But the nurseries like late frosts and freezes,more sales for them!! Extended forecasts look good,but never know for sure,gonna set everything out this week. snuffy |

Night before last it got down to 23 degrees here and has wiped out the peach crop in this part of the state!
If any of you have never tried them, plant some Cherokee Purple tomatoes. Of all the varieties I have tried, these have became my favorites!
