So, I've had my first taste of this today on Etsy. I get a convo from a buyer trying to tell me that the sterling silver ring I made from him must not be made from sterling silver because it's reacting with his skin. This is immediately followed up with this:
"We can do a partial refund and I'll leave a 5-star review or a 2-3 star review, you pick."
Well, isn't that interesting. If I give him money: everything is is great and the product/service is 5 stars. If I don't give him money: the ring sucks, service sucks and I get a 2-3 star review. I like how he's not interested in actually returning the ring to me, he just wants money in exchange for his positive review. So, is there really an issue with the ring, or is he just looking to get something for nothing? I'm leaning towards the latter.

I'm sure that you are reporting him to etsy, right? What a douche. I hope he used etsy to contact you. Stupid douche.

I've had some problems with people, too. My latest was a woman who wanted a pendant at half the price. I said the stone was worth what she was offering. I came down 10.00 instead. She quickly replied that the picture of it in my hand was nasty. So, naturally, I replied with, "Thank you " Then she comes back and says, "Excuse the Google typo it was supposed to say may I see picture of this in your hand?" BS. Every one of my listings has a picture of the item in my hand and she obviously saw the ad. I didn't bother to respond to her.

I just thought of something.... if etsy doesn't do anything and the guy leaves a bad review- THEN you can get etsy involved and I think they would be more apt to consider that convo.

I figure that if he does leave a negative review, I can still respond to the review with a copy and paste of his extortion convo. It's not ideal, since many shoppers don't take the time to actually read anything...but it's better than nothing.

Ouch...some people...My favorite in the last week was an international buyer asking me to lie on his customs paperwork so he could avoid import taxes...NOPE. I expect to be dinged on that review too for having integrity.

I would demand return for full refund. It is normal and customary to do so.
Does etsy allow us to respond to the 2 stars?
"I offered to refund 100% upon receipt of goods. Customer failed to return the product."
It is a form of extortion. And is totally unfair and he has all the marbles.
If it is worth keeping it is worth paying full pop.

The normal and reasonable request is to return the product for a refund, not to hold your good review hostage in exchange for money. I offered a full refund upon receipt of the goods. There's been no response to that.

The normal and reasonable request is to return the product for a refund, not to hold your good review hostage in exchange for money. I offered a full refund upon receipt of the goods. There's been no response to that. I once had a lawyer buy $1200 worth of snakes. A sexy adult pair of some really gorgeous rainbow boas. The heat pack i used to warm them overnight failed. They arrived cold. They are tropical. The buy demanded a 50% discount for the "sick snakes". I said no, I would accept full return and offer full refund, even including the return postage. The heat pack failure was on me. He then quoted some business code that makes it acceptable for him to ask for compensation. My reaction wasnt thoughtful, it was simply a reaction. I started laughing. He asked me why I laughed. I said "you are the business attorney. I am quite certain your business code allows for me to require full return and full refund." To which he responded, "yeah, I guess it does." And then asked again for a partial discount. I said if they are worth keeping, then they are worth full price. I will give you 48 hours to decide. He kept the snakes. Hold strong Don. These have a way of working themselves out. At least for the honest dealers like yourself. By the way, if he dings you,on the review, shout it here, loud and clear. You have friends here and they will appreciate the heads up.

Ouch...some people...My favorite in the last week was an international buyer asking me to lie on his customs paperwork so he could avoid import taxes...NOPE. I expect to be dinged on that review too for having integrity. I don't sell on Etsy but when I used to ship internationally on eBay I had a few buyers ask me to lie on the customs forms too. Never would do it. In addition to the repugnance of the dishonesty, I'm pretty sure it's a Federal offense to lie on a customs form. So we've stopped shipping internationally because we got tired of the hassles. Too much time wasted getting international shipping costs and then the potential buyer who asked for a shipping quote didn't want to pay the shipping and wouldn't buy. And I even had a couple who didn't ask shipping costs and won the bids but then backed out of the sale after learning what the international shipping costs were. Larry C.

Etsy will likely respond on that threat.
Reviews- Keep an eye on them. I believe you have 30 days to contest and remove malicious reviews. Miss the 30 days and they become permanent. Beware The convos, transaction and listing along with photos will be reviewed. If Etsy determines you misrepresented your product the bad review will probably stick. If your customer is into false accusations Etsy will allow bad review removed.
Etsy is a walk in the park. Houzz is incredible. They ALWAYS deem the customer is right. I told Houzz to stick it on two totally unwarranted complaints. My wording in the listing was very very clear. Specifications CLEARLY stated regarding complaints. Houzz had 2 shifts of workers trying to break me with calls and e-mails. Harassment. Probably on commission. I raised my prices on Houzz due to cost of doing business with them.
Only had one slightly bad review on Etsy and it was warranted. Not a bad thing to not have an occasional poor review, 100% looks unreal.

I just got a 4 star review. The text says "Beautiful stone, fast and prompt delivery." Go figure. Some people just don't hand out 5 stars. One time, I got a 3 star and good text. I asked her if there was anything I could do to make it a 5 star experience for her. She immediately changed it to 5 stars- she had made a mistake clicking. I was hoping the 4 star was the same, but no response. Oh well. It won't really hurt.
If you have a lot of good reviews, one bad one won't hurt you overall and it will soon be buried after a few more. I just hate that it can linger on the frontpage.

Ever thought of throwing a couple tootsie rolls in there? A la Rock Shed. Just might take a four to a five. ETA: of course, it doesn't HAVE to be a tootsie roll.

Actually, like a lot of sellers, I include a free cab. I have plenty that don't make the cut for the shop.

How do you not get 5 stars for that alone?

How do you not get 5 stars for that alone? Beats me. Like I said, some people just don't give 5 stars.

On Etsy, I had a buyer order up a chain necklace I had made. I checked her ratings. Awful at first glance. Then I checked to see how she earned all those terrible ratings.
Turns out she frequently ordered big orders of say 50 candles, but then didn't follow through. Candle seller gave her a black mark for each candle.
Buyer supplied goodies to local school. Yes, she should have been more careful, but I think just one negative would have worked with an explanation.
She gave me a most terrific positive feedback.
Good luck, Drummond. Looks like blackmail.
