Went and seen my friend I get Mary Ellen from today and captbob wanted to see the banded iron from this area. My friend who's a geologist said he had a sample from a mine but its a state park now. He gets to go into all the local iron mines. He suggested the UP michigan. If it warms up I will explore the state park boundries. I also have a friend bringing me a sample from the mine he works at. Banded iron northern MN not very showy Lakers the biggest are about a pound

That banded iron looks pretty fracture free. Bet it looks pretty nice when wet/polished. Thank you for the photo!

My geologist friend said I could go along on a collecting trip for Mary Ellen this summer after I told him I was Msha certified. He said bring a truck with a Tommy lift or lift gate and we would roll them on. I have a friend that has a one ton I can rig something up on.

Very nice lakers. Takes forever to polish small ones but that size won't fit in a 3 lb. tumbler.:) Nice
