Anyone here familiar with Kinradite - an ultra rare poppy jasper from the SF bay area? The slab for sale in the ad below looks like Hornitos to me - I have some small pieces with a very similar look. If there was a high probability the ad is accurate I might buy it. ETA: I've removed all traces of the seller because I don't want to cause any embarrassment - or hurt feelings. I'm seriously interested in buying the slab but it's expensive and I want to be more familiar with the situation. Sabre52luvtogrow

I asked the seller what the provenance was - how do they know it's Kinradite... This is the response I received...

I have some Webb Ranch (Hornitos) that looks almost identical. Mel has talked with me about the find near the SF bridge. So it does exist. Rarest? I dunno.

I walked Land's End last Nov & found a small piece of red orbicular jasper on the beach just down the hill from the labrynth. The orbs are very small with no white, just shades of red. I'll add a photo when I get the chance. Lynn

Gotta add that seller is awfully proud of that stuff. Has a little piece on eBay listed for 300 bucks!
Have dealt with seller before and it was all good. Just bought a big 28 lb chunk of Bloody Basin from him a month or less ago.

Hey Tommy, Nope, not kinradite. That's definitely Hornitos . I've dug the exact pit it comes from and have a number of slabs. Kinradite I've seen looks either a lot like Olympic Poppy Jasper pebbles ( red on dark background) or it's white poppies on red background. There are many many types at the Hornitos locations, including some that is dead on for Kinradite but none of the Kinradite I've seen looks anything like the Hornitos the guy has for sale. Sellers often use the ploy of choosing the "rare" variety when they go to sell rough *L*. Self collected Hornitos. Probably a dozen types in that pit left example here If you can believe it these all came from the same block of Hornitos but note similarity of left slice to his example. Hornitos but a lot like what Kinradite looks like Similar to other Kinradite type but also Hornitos. Kinradite is so rare I've only seen it back when the Ferry Bldg in SF held the Calif. Division of Mines collection. I don't even have an example in my collection. This rough is also from my old ranch near Hornitos but is a dead ringer for the "Kinradite/Olympic jasper" pebbles found on the beaches from San Francisco north to Washington state ....Mel

Have dealt with seller before and it was all good. Same here. They are good people who I know in real life which is why I don't want to cause a fuss but yeah, what Mel said.

Roy, like or similar to. My stuff pictured came from Hunters Valley near Hornitos, CA. Same age stuff and similar origin ( Marine I believe) as Franciscan Formation but in Sierra foothills instead of the Coast Ranges. Very similar jasper, as beach pebbles originating in Franciscan Formation deposits, occur on beaches from San Francisco north into Washington. The ones found on the Olympic Peninsula are often called Olympic Poppy jasper. Hunters Valley is sort of an odd mix of deposits of old marine sediment based cherts and greenstone ( a metamorphosed old marine basalt). I used to think the poppy jasper host rock was andesite but did some research and greenstone came up which makes sense as the poppy is associated with gold mines and those are supposed to be in the greenstone belt. Folks say the poppy jasper there is chert from old marine origins similar to those in the Coast Ranges but I found nodular and vein deposits in situ in greenstone host rock. The hillside across from my house in Hunters Valley was full of big bounders full of poppy nodules but really hard to extract. Hard rock mining is for youngsters. I'm not sure what the host rock is for the Coast Range deposits as I've only ever hunted that as float...Mel

Changing it up a bit.... I won some morgan hill pieces last night that were listed as Moroccan agate. They absolutely look like morgan hill. 10 bucks for 4 pieces. One was much better than the others.

This is from the ad. The others are nice, but not as nice and one hit wonders. I can get 2 probably without stabilizing. Maybe this will be my first at stabilizing-- gotta do it eventually....
