Picked up this nice hunk of jasper at my local rock show today... Got it for $5.00 at the club's silent auction. I'm wondering if anyone can give me a more specific location than " picture jasper Oregon" as the tag says. Here's 3 sides pictured dry: Here's 2 sides wet. Apparently Photobucket ate 1 of them... Thanks for looking Nate

OK so I did a little Google surfing and my very amateur guess is this is possibly from the owyhee area, solely based on the light colored almost limestone looking crust.

It may be a picture jasper, but it looks to have a low silica content. More like sandstone. That means don't expect it to take a good polish. Lynn

Yeah I thought the same Lynn, looks quite porous except I don't think it's sandstone. Now I'm really wanting to dig my saw out of storage (pack it away for the winter because of needing parking space in the garage)... Hopefully in a few more weeks.

Slab it and trim it up and use it as is for a display base!!! South Dakota has picture sandstone that is beautiful as wall mounts like it's a picture!

I was thinking similar, Bill. I figure if it's too porous to polish, the slabs will work well as coasters.

KY picture sandstone.
I've thought of making a coaster out of it, but I kind of like it as is.

That is a cool piece. Looks great as is, but the sandstone makes wonderful coasters because it absorbs the condensation from cold drinks.

Thanks Mike. Decent specimen if nothing else. If after a couple of slabs it doesn't look promising it'll be a nice bookend.

We both need coasters!

Do you think that piece is grainy throughout? There are chips on the rim that look smooth and conchoidal. Maybe it got naturally exposed and then acquired the crust?

I'm really not sure. It is quite heavy, at least 5#. I'll find out when I cut it, which won't be for a few more weeks when I dig my slab saw out.
