Hi all,
I just bought a Beacon Star TC-1 10"lapidary saw off ebay and managed to get it nearly working (blade still neads replacing for a start!)
The autofeed was completely burnt out and i've stripped off the motor. The feed mechanism and vice itself are still working and with a bit of jiggery-pokery I should be able to put another motor on it.
Here's my question, how fast/slow do I set up the motor to run? Or do I adjust it dependant on the rock?

I'm not familiar with auto feed, never used it, so I'm no help there.
BUT... Gravity feed works well and may be an easier option for you. You'd just need a cord connected to the front of the vise sled and ideally a roller for it to hang over the edge. Connect weight to the cord to pull the rock into the saw.

Yes vice speed can vary with the rock but the safest option is to set it up slow enough for big rocks and to allow your saw to cruise through smaller / softer rocks at the same speed. For me an ideal speed would be 1" in 7 minutes. Perhaps as fast as 1" in 5 minutes, but not much faster than that. If you want to determine what rpms are necessary, you will have to work backwards based on all the pulley reductions that your saw entails. I'd sure recommend resurrecting the power feed if you can - you can always back down to gravity feed.

Thanks both for getting back to me, I've got an old lortone tumbler motor kicking around that would probably serve as a stand in to run the feed, couple it with an old dimmer switch to allow me to play round with the speed (my bedside lamp can make a sacrifice for this!). If this fails I'll try the low-tech option of gravity feed!
