A photo of rock carving in action (dremel blazing, chips flying, craftsperson working, etc.) is needed. Post for the project or post just to show off and have fun. Post any and all photos you can related to the subject for any reason you feel like posting a photo One photo will make the final cut and will be cropped and used as an icon on the redesigned front page of www.rocktumblinghobby.com

LOL! @ hatching the agate! Those are great photos and AMAZING sculptures! I could spend a ton of time in there. Go with the eagle. (Or the deer in progress.)

Those are so good, it's hard to believe they're really made of stone.

The best part was the shop at the end where there were selling a lot of touristy stuff BUT there was a shelf of local German agate for sale - former museum pieces that had chipped or broken etc. That's where I got some of my best stuff that we brought back. Just to clarify the decision has already been made and the graphic is completed. I was just curious if anyone could guess which one I went with

Well I love the frog on the reed, but if I was choosing one, I think I'd orthorectify the Michaelangelo. Without treatment, probably the frog 'cos he's climbing out of the screen, coming right at you!

Been there. Both the Deutsches Edelstein Museum and the Idar-Oberstein Museum below the church-in-the-rocks are awesome places to visit. Lucky you! I didn't find any of the local agates offered for purchase or I'd have grabbed them. But I did find an amazing display of locally-found agates including some from a new locality near I-O.
I think I have an image of a German carver at work but it's probably of no consequence since you've already chosen a picture. I happen to think the tourmaline duck is exquisite but I have no idea which image you've chosen.

I'm happy to look at any "action" photos - I only picked (spoiler alert) the snail photo because I need something in place before the page goes up. As long as you have rights to share it with me for display on the site I'd love to see it. We actually stayed in the hotel across the driveway from the other museum below the church in the rocks. Once in a lifetime experience for sure. I found a few local rocks in the touristy gift shops up and down the street - invariably on a lower shelf - sometimes on the floor. Almost every shop had one or two local rocks as if they really didn't know what to do with them. Yes those are giant agates hanging on the outside walls haha.

Tommy , I searched for the carver image but haven't found it so far. Getting permission to use it could be a hassle -- I hadn't thought about that. Wish I'd had more time to search the shops for stones. I looked thru a couple but they had mostly low-end junk I wasn't interested in. Here's an image of an agate from the new source near I-O -- can't recall the name of the area. Neat stuff. This is the carving I found almost incredible in its fine detail:

Yes I love the mouse too - that was my favorite of the bunch. The carver was able to convey an emotion in that carving that I wasn't quite able to understand or put into words. Almost as if the mouse was begging for his life.

Wow - Idar Oberstein is only a few hours from the Channel Crossing (add 5 or 6 hours for travel to the English south coast). Might just have to go sometime!

Sorry I missed this Tommy . Just thought I would add these anyway just to show what mediocre looks like. Compared to the carvings in the museum I would probably have to drop all the way back to novice. Jim Those are great shots Jim - thanks for posting them! You are a super talented artist - you sell yourself way short. If I could even scratch the surface (no pun intended) on a carving like any of yours I'd be happy as can be. I was just talking to my wife tonight about the fact that I recognize that I can do creative things with things that already exist, BUT I am lacking the artist gene of someone who can conceptualize something from nothing and bring it forth. It drives me crazy at times - if I have a blank slate in front of me I'm dead in the water.
