Howdy folks, This is what I spend most my time doing. We have a ranch riding group here and about 30+ miles of horse trails. Today was one of our special rides to the home of the folks who collect the Rio grande agate. They just built a nice new BBQ area so we rode up from the stables for a cookout. Part of the riders keep their horses at that set of corrals so they drove back while the rest of us rode the whole route. We have a lot of fun here in Texas. Beautiful warm, sunny, green spring day. The cookout with a few of the horses in the background.  Remaining riders heading out for the return leg of the ride. I'm the trail leader in the striped shirt on the big blue roan. Though admittedly I'm so big it looks like he should be riding me.    Approaching the stables with the gang.   |

Looks like fun. I used to ride, but my knees can't handle it any more. After a while, the outside of my knees are killing me. No amount of stirrup adjustment or turning the toes outward took care of it. Too bad, too. I have access to two horses that my wife helps take care of.

Looks like y'all are enjoying your day. I used to ride but got older and decided rodeos weren't my thing. I can sit on the most docile horse and they go ape-shit-crazy!!! Every time. So now I'll admire them from the ground 😔

Mel, I hear ya on the rodeo thing. Young Blue saw his shadow on the white wall of the stable as I rode around the corner this AM and went off like a bomb. Almost put me on the ground. The old Roy Rogers quote is a good thing to remember." When you're young and fall off a horse, you may break something. When you're my age you splatter." *L*
Something we often tell folks is, " The main object of horseback riding is keeping the horse between you and the ground"
Good for the mental health though. Another quote, " All I pay my psychiatrist is the cost of feed and hay and he'll listen to me all day."

What no pictures of the food? Gee, I would have liked to have eaten some good Texas BBQ. Nice pictures anyway though.

Looks like a fun day and a beautiful one, too.
I have to ask, because I know diddly about horses. I have heard of horses called "roan", but I have no clue what it means. What is it?

rockjunquie, A roan horse has silver/gray hairs in with it's base coat color especially over the back and haunches. A " blue roan" has a deep brown to black base color with the gray hairs over the back and rump, giving the horse sort of a gun metal blue/black silvery look. We have a " red roan" too which is sort of grizzled gray/silver over a base reddish color. Blue roans are my favorite horses, I ride two big ones, Blue and Blueberry. Blueberry is still in training and I'm taking him for a long ride in the morning. He's always a bit of a challenge because he's kind of unpredictable ( translate it to (He can be an idiot). Old horseback proverb: " Horseback riding is nuts and bolts. If the horse is nuts, he bolts" *L*
Dave, I assume they did not have Cashel EZ knee stirrup rotators when you were riding. I have them on all my rigs and they are incredible. Keeps your stirrups facing forward and takes the fender/flex pressure off your knees. Wonderful for older riders with bum knees...Mel

Dave, I assume they did not have Cashel EZ knee stirrup rotators when you were riding. I have them on all my rigs and they are incredible. Keeps your stirrups facing forward and takes the fender/flex pressure off your knees. Wonderful for older riders with bum knees...Mel I have never heard of them, but since I haven't paid too much attention to stuff like that, it doesn't surprise me. Sounds like a great product. I was wondering how you were able to so easily point your toes out as far as they are in the photo. Thanks for the info. Dave |

Dave, Yep Cashels made riding a whole new way more comfortable experience for me. Before I installed them I actually had to wear a knee brace on the ole basketball knee.
Mike, on a smaller horse my legs almost drag the ground *L*. I'm about six four and 225 but real long leggity. I actually had to punch more holes clear to the end of the stirrup leathers plus use the Cashels which add a couple inches of length. I always feel sorry for the horse carrying a rider my size so I ride a hybrid Aussie endurance saddle that only weighs 17 pounds to lighten the horses load a bit....Mel

Nice photos Mel.......Reminded me of my times in Montana riding horse....,as for huge horses,my buddy has one that is 21 hands tall,its a brute,but very gentle..

Looks like a great day. Haven't ridden in a few years, we used to hunt in the Wind River Range with my friends horses and mules. When I was younger, I could hit the ground and jump right back up. These days I hit the ground and go thud. Guess gravity gets stronger as one gets older. Thanks for the pics.
