Howdy folks, Here on the ranch we have a saying, "Round these parts ya never know what's gonna walk out of the brush." This bad boy showed up yesterday trying to make friends with a neighbors fake deer. Nice Hawaiian Black Sheep. Someone is missing a valuable animal and the closest ranch that has these is over on the old Texas Ranger road a few miles away. Gonna have to try to trap it as we don't want him cross breeding with our prize mouflon sheep. Already have problems with another neighbors Corsicans messing with our lady sheeps.....Mel

Good luck rounding up that bad boy. He may have a few issues with authority.
When it comes to sheep, is it "finders keepers"? Do you get to sell him on e-bay? I will be following the saga if you post the roundup.

Mel, I am sure you know but I will mention it anyway. The best eatin off of those will also make him leave your females alone. But at his age you probably couldn't stick a fork in the gravy. Worth a try though because if they are that tough they would make good chew toys for the dogs.
With cattle they are Rocky Mountain Oysters but with sheep I do not know what fancy name they have for them. Shesticles Maybe. Jim

Ack, Jim my great uncle was a sheep farmer. Named them all and didn't cookem till they was old. As a result I even preferred my pop's taxidermy meat to mutton. Awful stuff. I'd have to be starvin to eat one of those big black rams! Probably tough as nails and strong as heck....Mel

Sabre52 We had 200 head the whole time I was growing up. Only tried mutton once and did not finish what was on my plate. But cabrito (young goat) in Mexico is fine eating even though it seems like it would be about the same. Took a lot of persuading to get me to try it though. A restaurant in Monterey makes it much better than what I had over on the gulf coast. Short drive for you and beautiful country too. Jim

Nice "Ram"!!! Great colors! As for sheep (Mutton) they can have that meat,nasty stuff!!!! Cousin was cookin' mutton for supper one time,I was invited to chow down with them-pulled into the drive way,smelled the mutton cooking and got back in my car and headed to the local pub for beer and pizza.. Peed him off,but told him,I don't eat the stuff!

There is only one way I'll eat mutton. My mom used to marinade the meat and make shish kabobs with bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, new potatoes, etc. After some grilling, then it was edible. (Though still not a favorite!) As for goat, I did eat that one time, many years ago (early 70s?). Went to Mexico with an old boyfriend, his sister, her druggy boyfriend, and several of his druggy buddies in an old four-holer Buick. A friend of theirs that lived east of TJ (monied people, large ranch) had a family reunion/huge party. They cooked goat in 5 gallon paint buckets buried in the ground. The meat was good, but wondering how well the buckets has been cleaned before reuse??

Mexico, Japan and all over the USA we eat lamb. Lamb isn't mutton. It's a very nice and mild red meat. Delish. Here in Chino i eat Chivo (goat) 5-6 times a year. Usually in a rich stew called Birria. Also delish.

I LOVE lamb, but have never had mutton. Mom had it as a kid and hated it, so she never made us eat it- same with cream of wheat. She had nightmares about drowning in it as a kid, so she never forced us.
Lamb is incredible. I like a good lamb stew and chop and a yummy gyro.

You're right Scott, I have never seen mutton in the grocery stores around here. Maybe in a butcher shop? And if it is something the Mexicans eat, you can be sure it is sold in some of the Mexican markets.

Ranch darted it and sold it for $650. Here in Texas, it's finders keepers I guess.
PS: last time I tried to catch a whitetail that was trapped in electrical fencing tape, dang thing near killed me. No more wildlife roping for me...Mel
