I have purchased and used 4 rockhounding guides, some with success some without. To be fair pls recognize that I only went to a few sites in each guide; they could have been the best and worst places to go! These are my observations:
- Rockhounding Wyoming by Graham -- Over all I was a bit disappointed but to be fair I only tried 4 sites near Yellowstone and Cody.
1) Banded Geiss along rte 212- didn't see any
2) Sandstone Shells along rte294- site was fenced in.
3) Colored Chalcedony along rte 120- No buble formations of chalcedony but lots of large Gypsum
4) Pet Wood along the S. and N.Fork- may be good, it was too wet to determine. - Rockhounding Montana by Feldman- Very disappointed! This book is very vague about collecting sites and mostly seems to say " Look through the mine tailings" in old mining areas and that's about it! One promising site was collecting garnets near Ruby Reservoir. I found some garnets in gneiss. The water level was too high to collect along the banks and low spots and the rain made the dirt roads a bit too slippery for my vehicle. Some locals had pity on us and gave my wife some nice rocks
csroc - Rockhounding Utah by Kaepple- Excellent guide - found rocks at these sites:
1) Dewey Bridge- Agate
2) Joe Wilsons Arch - Agate
3) Old Notom Rd - Agate
4) Fossil Shell Hills - Devis Toenails
5) Bullfrog Turnoff - Pet Wood - Gem Trails Of New Mexico by Mitchell - Excellent Guide - Found Rock at:
1) Los Lunas - Jasper, Pet Wood.
2) Pedernal Peak - Agate
3) Abiqui reservoir Agate
4) Thoreau- Pet Wood
